Those two articles (1 and 2) from the Wikipedia are quite good and a starter for a broader discussion. Searching on SSP, I found some data on American city propers. I'm looking forward to see on states and metro areas.

From the Wikipedia:

Vehicles per 1000 inhabitants

United States ----- 797

Australia --------- 717

New Zealand ----- 712

Italy ------------- 679

Greece ----------- 624

Finland ----------- 612

Canada ----------- 607

Spain ------------ 593

Japan ------------ 591

Norway ---------- 584

Austria ---------- 578

France ----------- 578

Germany --------- 572

Switzerland ------ 566

Belgium ---------- 559

Portugal ---------- 548

Poland ----------- 537

Netherlands ------ 528

Sweden ----------- 520

Great Britain ------ 519

Ireland ------------ 513

Denmark ---------- 480

South Korea ------- 376

Argentina --------- 314

Russia ------------ 293

Mexico ------------ 275

Brazil -------------- 249

Romania ----------- 235

Thailand ----------- 206

Uruguay ----------- 200

Chile --------------- 184

Ukraine ------------ 173

South Africa ------- 165

Venezuela --------- 147

Turkey ------------- 144

China --------------- 83

Hong Kong ---------- 77

Peru ---------------- 73

Colombia ----------- 71

Indonesia ---------- 60

Egypt --------------- 45

Nigeria -------------- 31

India ---------------- 18

Pakistan ------------ 18

Congo ---------------- 5

Bangladesh ---------- 3

This list, unlike, the ones I've posted on Brazil, includes buses and trucks as well, so they're not perfectly comparable.

It'd be interesting to know the numbers/1000 population for the 15+ age group since most developing countries still have bottom-heavy population distributions, and obviously kids don't drive.

Interesting how the economic basket cases in Europe, Italy, Greece, and Spain occupy the #1, #2, and #4 spots in European car ownership rates.

On the bright side, car ownership has declined noticeably among US teens and young adults. It peaked a decade ago. Debate rages over the causes, including higher oil prices, the effects of smartphones, the economy, people moving into core cities, etc. At least a good chunk of it seems permanent.

I would of thought China would be higher. Probably explains the millions of bicycles in there cities.

Also Russia as well. The country is huge, and the cities tend to be dense, but very sprawled out, and slightly suburban looking from the air (With Apartment blocks for miles of course).

And the #3 European spot is a very sparsely populated country with long winters. Finland is about half has densely populated as the US, less than 1/10th the density of Italy. So cars are a must for many.

I could foresee the development of cars with a standard of lets say 60 miles to the gallon or more being a reason for people to live far from cities. With the rise in technologies in solar, and electric cars, people will have a reason to live far from cities. I don't think the car culture will ever end in America. Especially as the prices for these types of fuel technologies drops ( Stuff is always expensive when it first comes out).

The only way to get a more urban culture going in the U.S. is to make cities more appealing, and reduce crime. Yet, its not everyone cup of tea. People like living in quite neighborhoods that are peaceful, have almost 0 violent crime, and good schools. All of this will continue to fuel the car lifestyle. Plus, driving is fun IMO. F*** the bus.

Thanks for those Brazilian maps. The across-the-board increase over the past decade is quite astounding.

People are streaming into a lot of cities. So much that rents are far higher per square foot than the average suburb, or even most high-end suburbs.

Nobody is arguing that cars will go away. But finally there are alternatives, and many cities don't shove cars down people's throats as they used to, like requiring huge amounts of parking in new buildings, or building single-use roads. It was social engineering at its worst...and still is in some places.

But crisis affected car sales greatly in those countries. In Spain, in 2006, almost 2 million cars were sold. In 2011, less than 700,000. Same for Greece from 300,000 to 80,000. As comparison, in Brazilian states with similar population (Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul), 300,000 cars were sold.

Only Italy managed to keep 1.8 million car sales/year, but they're wealthier. As the list posted is based in 2010 figures, we'll probably see Spain and Greece falling down on the ranking.

Yes. Over 100% growth on the past 10 years. The past 10 years were good to Brazil which reflected on the fast increase of car ownership. As all states grew, regional differences remained.

Cars are expensive items in Brazil due taxes, so it basically reflects the size of middle class in every state and it's a perfect proxy to measure it.

The chart says vehicle ownership, not necessarily cars. I wouldn't be surprised if they're including scooter sales, as they make up a huge percentage of the motor vehicles in urban areas in all three of those countries.

As I stated, it includes cars, SUVs, pickups, trucks and buses. Two-wheel vehichles are excluded (follow the link). Italy is well-know for its car "obsession", and it's been consistently the second largest car market from Europe. Only after the crisis, car sales in Britain and France overtook Italy.

I'm rather shocked that Greece and Italy have higher rates than Canada given the much newer, auto-based development of the latter's towns and cities.

That's odd. I lived in Italy briefly, and never would have assumed car ownership was so high. Of course, I was in Umbria (Perugia metro) and spent a lot of time in Lazio and Sicilia so maybe I didn't spend much time in high-ownership areas.

Note it's only cars, SUVs and pickup trucks for Brazilian areas. To make them comparable to the international list I posted, I added here buses and trucks as well for Brazil and the five regions. Around an extra 8% bump:

------------------- Motor Vehicles --- Ratio
Code:
BRASIL --------- 57.070.424 --- 284

NORTE ----------- 1.939.641 --- 114
NORDESTE -------- 7.108.372 --- 127
CENTRO-OESTE ---- 4.881.395 --- 326
SUDESTE -------- 30.915.237 --- 366
SUL ------------ 12.225.779 --- 425
Brazil 2013 comparable with Russia/Mexico; North and Northeast between Turkey and China; Midwest and Southeast between South Korea and Argentina; and South between Denmark and South Korea.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Guys, what about states/provinces/metro areas/cities on the rest of the world? Does someone have such data to share with us?

Despite what people think of Europe and car use, Italy has always been near the top for auto ownership for developed countries.

They may not use them for every trip, but Italians in general are very very into cars.

I know in the little town my family is from in Italy, people drive just to go a two block down the road, when one could walk very easily. The mayor of Milano got bullets mailed to him in the mail when Milano started a congestion charge in the city centre. Italians feel very strongly about their cars
