The little Portland of the East (no, not that one) salutes you.

Asheville, North Carolina? Ok. I'm not all familiar with anything in the Carolinas or Georgia. Good to know. "Portland of the East" is confusing if you're referring to anything other than Portland, Maine... a GREAT town btw. And, being unfamiliar with anything in that part of the South, I'd think of Athens, Georgia if I heard "Portland of the South." I've never been there, but I've heard it is similar to Austin but with a 'Georgia' feel. But then again, I've heard people call Austin the "Portland of the South," which is absurd because Austin and Portland couldn't be more dissimilar. Portland is unlike any other city in the US. And, if anything, it's MOST similar to San Francisco, but even that's a stretch.

Fine thread, the local snow looks great! I'm not scared of freezing at all, even frustrated when winter's not cold enough in my place....
That's a deserving place, you can sense.

This winter has been abnormally warm and dry up here in the PNW for the most part so this was a welcome relief (at least in my eyes). I absolutely love the snow and cold weather.

Unfortunately, a warm front with tons of rain is moving in behind this cold front so the snow will probably be gone by Tuesday.

This is my 3rd winter up here, and this is the first time there has this much snow for a prolonged period of time (4 days now).

Our "average" is about 6" per year, but it usually melts within a few hours. It snowed twice in winter 2011-2012, got probably an inch or two a couple different times and it was gone by the afternoon, washed away by rain. In winter 2012-2013, we had a few days with flurries but nothing measurable.

For the 2013-2014 season, we got about an inch of snow in early December that stuck around for a couple days thanks to temperatures in the 20s, and then this storm dropped about 7"+1.5" of ice and counting.

Basically every block is cool and worthwhile in central Portland. It's pretty remarkable really. The narrow streets and small blocks are part of it.

As for the snow, that's impressive. Guessing most things were closed?

Up north we had bit last night as well. A lot of patches even stuck all day. But nothing like that.

That's a helluva lot of snow for Portland. Didn't realize you guys had got so much of it. It's a nice change of scenery for the city; it certainly has that "wonderland" vibe to it. Also very nice to see the locals embracing the weather instead of hiding from it, even if it isn't something they're used to.

Since my Mom moved out there seven years ago or so, this is maybe the third big snow they've had. She claims the city has rules AGAINST the use of salt on the streets. Looking at these pictures, that certainly seems true.

Well to be fair, Atlanta got about 6 inches less than Portland did, which is much harder to deal with.

Shit, you're a lot braver than I was. I didn't dare take my camera out in this mess for fear of slipping and breaking something. You did, however, walk all the same places I did. Amazing we didn't run into each other, especially since it looks like you circled my apartment twice.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing all these very nice pictures of Portland, Derek!

Snow makes Portland pretty. I´ve liked a lot all the urban scenes you´ve captured in your tour along the city. Very good job! I like to see the streets covered by snow in a large city like Portland. A very good moment to take pictures in the city, like you did.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.
