Salt Lake City Resort's New Platinum Contribution

Salt Lake City's Park City Resort -
Swaner EcoCenter and Preserve

jetsongreen.com

EcoCenter a feat of environmental ingenuity -
Swaner is a place of solace that nurtures both the land and the human spirit.

With 1,200 acres of breathtaking open space nestled amidst expanding development, Swaner is a refuge for an abundance of wildlife. Over 10 miles of trails offer recreational opportunities for mountain bikers, hikers, birdwatchers, fishermen, snowshoers and photographers.

Fostering the delicate relationship between people and nature is at the heart of managing this community treasure.

Celebrating that relationship is at the heart of the new Swaner EcoCenter. The EcoCenter is one of the greenest buildings in Utah, a symbol of Swaner’s ideals and values, and a powerful expression of our relationship to the environment. It is a place for reflection, enlightenment and celebration.

Views from the new tower at the soon-to-be-unveiled Swaner EcoCenter dumbfound even nature preserve officials...

...The Swaner EcoCenter, which consists of roughly 1,200 acres that saddle Interstate 80, will unveil its new learning facility Sunday near the northwestern edge of the preserve. The 10,000-square-foot building, with its interactive exhibits, is certified platinum, the highest ranking from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a group which ranks buildings based on their green architectural features.

Yeah, I've noticed that. I'm glad the area is beginning to embrace the green building codes.

Salt Lake City Metro - Herriman » Sorenson Center earns elite platinum LEED certification.

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/51...ergy.html.csp#

Herriman • When it opens for business Friday, the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center won’t just be Salt Lake County’s newest.

The $26.2-million building will join an elite group, one of six projects in the state to achieve platinum certification under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

“This is the first of its kind among recreation centers in the United States,” said Alan D. Rindlisbacher, marketing director for Layton Construction Co., which built the center. The building was designed to use 40 percent less energy than a non-LEED-certified structure of similar size, Rindlisbacher said...

Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) The J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center in Herriman was financed with $20 million from the Zoos, Arts and Parks tax, along with $1 million from the Jordan School District — which will use the center for swim meets — and a land donation from Herriman.

The $24 million, 103,000-square-foot platiunum LEED certified building has two pools and a double gymnasium. Sunlight is used as much as possible for daytime illumination.

Redford Conference Center -

The Greater Salt Lake City/Wasatch CSA is among a short list of North America's most attractive metro settings. The Southern portion of the Metro is certainly no exception

The recently opened Redford Conference Center is the latest installment of Robert Redford’s Sundance Resort, which is located at the base of Mt. Timpanogos in Sundance, Utah, and integrates sustainability and artistic expression through its facilities. The building encompasses nearly 3,500 square feet of meeting space.

Geothermal heating and cooling is employed throughout. In the winter, the center is heated by pulling heat from the ground below the building, and in the summer heat from the building is dispersed deep into the ground. The conference center employs 15,152 square feet of structural insulated panels (SIPs). The SIPs are strong enough to resist the snow loads of the area while still having the ability to span custom-built timber frame trusses.

Other sustainable attributes include the lighting; 95 percent of the light fixtures are LED or fluorescent. The ballroom’s carpet is cradle-to-cradle certified and 100 percent PVC-free and the hearthstone is locally quarried and required only two cuts for installation. Ballroom wood and the painted woods in the pre-function spaces are reclaimed barn materials, the snowfence materials in the pre-function area is from fences that retain snow in Wyoming, and the corral board material lining the stairwells is from old corrals in Montana and Wyoming.

Project team members include architect, Salerno Architects, salernoarchitects.com; lead consultant, structural engineer, and landscape architect, LEI, www.lei-eng.com; contractor, Timber Works Inc., timberworksinc.net; and project superintendent, R&O Construction, randoco.com.

Salt Lake City unveils design for new Public Safety Building

...It will be "net zero," meaning it produces as much energy as it consumes, complete with 30,000 square feet of solar panels, rooftop plants, radiant heating and lights that shut off when natural light is sufficient. A public, tree-filled plaza with free Wi-Fi, also will include solar-powered charging stations for cell phones, iPads and more gadgets..."Quote: The Salt Lake Tribune"

The Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — Calling it a "momentous" event and "milestone moment," Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and other city leaders unveiled the design of the new Public Safety Building Friday.

"This building is really going to establish a new standard for public buildings in the state of Utah," Becker told a small crowd gathered at the Salt Lake City-County Building for the announcement.

The new building, which will house both the Salt Lake City Police and Fire departments as well as the Emergency Operations Center, will be built across from the Salt Lake City Library on 300 East. The design compliments the architecture of the library and includes many windows for natural light.

Deseret News

Not only will the new Public Safety Building be the "most earthquake-proof building in the state," according to one official, but it will be one of the greenest buildings in Utah, using 30,000 feet of solar panels among other energy-saving measures.

"It's the first net-zero public safety building in the country," Becker said, meaning it will generate as much energy as it uses.

The idea was to not make the new building look like a "fortress," but rather more open and inviting to the public.

However, Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Burbank said it would also be secure and highly functional for law enforcement purposes.

Deseret News

Earlier Friday, Burbank said he attended the funeral of a retired Salt Lake City Police officer who was the first K-9 officer in the city. Introducing the K-9 program changed how law enforcers policed the city, he said.

"The (new) building is no less significant than that program was some 35 years ago," he said.

In 2009, Salt Lake voters approved a $125 million bond for construction of the new building. Friday, officials said the project was on budget, costing about $77 million for the building itself and just under $120 million to make it functional inside.

A groundbreaking is scheduled for June 1 and completion in May 2013.
