Top Ten Buildings in Your Region

Ok, so we'll start off by everyone throwing a list of their ten favourites. Then I will create a poll to see which ten go National. Remember, no limits to the qualifiers. Could be any reason, architecture, historical significance, Political influence, height, etc.

I will start the poll tomorrow so lets throw some good ones up there. Try and put pictures if you can so people can see what they will be voting for.

Likewise, it's gotta be the Bessborough in Saskatoon.
If I knew how, I'd put in a photo.

Ours is bigger lol

Thank Bing for this one.

Thank the company on the photo for this one.

General information
Town or city Winnipeg
Country Canada
Construction started 1913
Cost CDN$ 8,075,865 (1921 est.)[1]
Height 242 ft
Technical details
Floor area 250,000 ft2
Design and construction
Architect Frank Worthington Simon & Henry Boddington III
The cost of reconstruction today would be prohibitive, due to such factors as a shortage of skilled masons.

Was Saskatchewan's completed before Manitoba's?

This is also incredibly difficult to choose top 5, but I am very interested to hear everyone's!

Actually, that's not true. The Saskatchewan Legislative Building is the largest of all of the legislative buildings in Canada. In fact, it is situated on the largest legislative grounds within the entire British Commonwealth. (One sure can't say the same about Manitioba's! ) It was designed to accomodate approximately 140 MLAs. (Due to the fact that Saskatchewan was envisaged to possess a population of at least a few million - by now.)

Even though I, years ago, wrote a paper about that building, I don't recall the floor area: but I DO know that [prior to 1980] the Sask Legislature had the longest straight corridor of any building in North America.

The Saskatchewan Legislature was the brainchild of Walter Scott.

Saskatchewan Legislative Building
General information
Architectural style Beaux-Arts
Town or city Regina, Saskatchewan
Country Canada
Construction started August 31, 1908
Completed January 25, 1912
Cost $1.75 million
Design and construction
Client Government of Saskatchewan
Owner Government of Saskatchewan
Architect Edward and William Sutherland Maxwell

The MB is Taller then the Sask one
The SQ Footage of the Sask is more then MB, even though they only have 58 MLA, lol, but the FOOTPRINT of the MB is much larger.

As for where it is Plunked, that is a Park, not Leg grounds. When they built Sasks, all they had were wood huts and lots of farmland and not trees, so yes they made a good decision to make a park around it, I love that, but In Winnipeg, we were all ready well on our way to being a large city, and that was the only space we had, in fact we bulldozed some buildings for it. Plus I like the fact ours like say Victoria's is right in the heart of downtown.

Wascana Centre (formally established in 1962) is a 9.3 square kilometre (2,300 acre) park built around Wascana Lake in Regina, Saskatchewan. It brings together lands and buildings owned by the City of Regina, University of Regina, and Province of Saskatchewan, each of which is represented on the board of directors, and contains government, recreational, cultural, educational and environmental facilities.

The Maxwells also submitted a design for the Manitoba legislature, in an H-shape (as was the winning design of Frank Worthington Simon) and with a dome that was similar to the Saskatchewan one in being rather broad and sort of pith-helmet shaped. The F.W. Simon design had a dome that appears substantially higher than the Maxwell design and certainly had a greater vertical emphasis.

The completion of the Saskatchewan legislature in 1912 led Manitoba to announce its own new building, replacing the 1880s predecessor (which was very similar to the New Brunswick legislature that still exists). The old legislature was on the grounds of the current legislature, standing along Kennedy Street alongside (and to the north of) Government House. The easternn 2/3 of the current legislature grounds were taken up by the numerous buildings that comprised Fort Osborne.

Thank you, that's right! I was going to add much that before. (But I didn't think it was necessary at that time.)

Speaking of Legislatures being located downtown, Victoria Park [in downtown Regina] was the location which the Sask Legislature was originally to be. Premier Walter Scott thought otherwise: He demanded that the Legislature was to be located ['far away'] to the south side of Wascana Creek. (30 some-odd years before Wascana Lake was completed.) Le raison d'etre was because he wanted the Provincial Legislature, and the City of Regina, to be as physically segregated from each other as possible; due to the fact that Scott was concerned about the Legislative Assembly being disproportionately influenced by the city officials. This was to mitigate, if not eliminate: "backdoor deals and corruption" with the City of Regina.

In the end though, it was a good decision which led to the development of beautiful-looking legislative grounds and Wascana Centre.

This thread was evolving into a history dissertation.

Top Ten? My choices are:

1. Saskatchewan Legislature
2. McCallum/Hill triplets
3. Bessborough Hotel
4. Hotel Saskatchewan
5. BMO Building (Regina)
6. SaskTel Building (Regina)
7. Regina City Hall
8. Renaissance Towers (Saskatoon)
9. Saskatoon Square
10. FCC Tower (Regina)

Subjectivity is bliss!

St. Boniface Basilica:

credit from fellow forumer vid.

i always find that this church gets shunned in lists such as this. notwithstanding its architecture, the history behind this structure should at the very least earn it a solid place in the top 10 for winnipeg no matter what.

That's amazing!!! (Though it's too bad that there are no people in the shot for scale purposes.)

Very surprised that you woudl pick Sasktel over SaskPower and BMO over Canada Life

Also the old Canada Life Building - (Reed Stenhouse) needs to be on that list:
