Most of Sacramento's street trees are elms, primarily East Coast varieties. A lot of early settlers to Sacramento were from the East Coast, and the first arborists brought Eastern varieties to use as street trees. There are not very many native valley oaks in Sacramento proper except along nature trails--most were cut down long ago. There is only one species of maple (the "Bigleaf Maple" or Oregon Maple) native to California--three species of palms are native in this state. The redwood is found in California, but it did not grow in the Sacramento area until we planted them here--they are generally found in cooler and more mountainous climates. In the later 19th and early 20th century, people started to use palms as ornamentals throughout California, and they are well-suited to our climate--you find them as far north as Redding. Other "foreign" trees were used, like eucalyptus, which were popularly used to shield smelly or unsightly areas from public view, due to their aromatic and scenic nature.

Sutter's Fort was reconstructed in the 1890s (only the central building is original) and when it was rebuilt, the landscape planners of the era provided their own ideas on how the fort should represent the state of California. That included palm trees, some cactus (also not native to Sacramento), redwoods, and I think there may be a couple of valley oaks in there too.

Sacramento is only the "city of trees" because people planted them. It didnt happen naturally. the most popular redwood in sacramento is the coast redwood, and we all know sacramento isnt a coastal city or even close. the second type is the giant redwood which is native to the southern sierra nevada, and again, thats not sacramento either. the maples, elms, poplars, redbuds, etc are for the most part non-native as well. some of the palms are native to southern california, and the most common you see in Sac are the Mexican fan palm, king and queen palms and the washington palm (like the ones at sutters fort) and the non-native canary island palm which you find in front of many victorian and historical homes, due to the fact that in victorian times having palm trees was a status symbol. thats why you find them in non tropical areas with victorian architecture like san francisco, sac, arcata, eureka (carson mansion) to name a few....

for me i like the palms trees in sac, because it mixes with the other trees from all the different climates representing all of california, which is fitting since it is the capital. but to each their own

You have a good point, I wish more people would acknowledge that most of the trees in the city are part of a synthetic and man-made environment that we have created, not "nature". Not that there is anything wrong with modifying our environment within the city. There's no doubt that trees serve a lot of purposes and make parts of the city more pleasant for people. But they're everywhere!!! There is not one neighborhood where one can go to escape the tyranny of trees in this city. I miss the streets of New York City that were beautiful and alive and absent of vegitation.

Great panoramic shot--the wall of riverfront warehouses, mills and powerhouses actually ran all the way south to R Street and north past the Railyards, with a wall of heavy industries just beyond them on the other side of Front Street, with more industries and wharves south to what is now Broadway, all sitting atop the big levee that was needed to prevent Sacramento from flooding. At that point, the river was a primary transportation corridor. West Sac looks a little more pristine, but they had their own levee wall, docks, and industries of their own, including the boat construction yard on the right. This was the era when Sacramento built stuff--technically we were a government town, but the overwhelming majority of the population worked for these various industries.

Wells Fargo Center 20th Anniversary

Wells Fargo Center under construction in 1991

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Grand Opening for the Wells Fargo
Center on Capitol Mall. As Sacramento’s tallest building at 423 ft, it has a
distinctive curved copper roof caps the building, with a cleft in its middle as
a postmodern architectural style. Inside the building there is a five-story
clear glass atrium with granite and marble walls with a Wells Fargo history
museum is located in the lobby and Il Fornaio Restaurant.

The architect Hellmuth, Obata and Kassenbaum (HOK) designed the tower
which also won the BOMA Building of the Year Award for 1994. This 502,000
sf. building occupies an entire 2.3 acre city block with a masonry & granite
exterior. There are a total of 33 floors (30 on ground, 3 below), 13 elevators
count and an adjoining 6-story parking garage.

The tower was originally constructed for $120 million in 1992 and sold in 2000
for $130 million. The building was later resold again to to Hines’ Core Fund in 2007 for $237,250,000 million.

East End Gateway 2 & 3 Construction Activity

East End Gateway Site 2

For the next two weeks at Site 2, the contractor will be laying out and
beginning to install plumbing, laying out the mechanical system, laying out
and framing the third floor walls, floor joists, and laying out and framing
fourth floor walls

East End Gateway Site 3

At Site3, the contractor will be laying out walls on the newly-poured
concrete deck above the first floor, removing the shoring that supported this
floor during concrete pouring, begin framing the second floor, and install the
plywood decking for the third floor. Work to lay out the building’s
mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems will begin.

What kind of shots are you looking to get? Skyline, nature, people, etc.?

@ThatDarnSacramentan- I love the American River too. I live in Midtown and even though I'm within walking and biking distance of the river there's no great access to it.
