Are those actual numbers or guesses?

When you consider that Morden and Winkler are only a few KMs apart, they are basically already the province's third largest urban area by a good margin with 22,218 combined citizens. I suppose the day will eventually come when the two cities will just grow into each other... I'm frankly a little surprised that more development hasn't occurred near the Boundary Trails Health Centre which is right between the two cities.

I'm also a bit surprised that Gimli only has 2,246. It's such a nice place and it looms somewhat large in provincial lore.

That's moreso because Air Canada turned it into an unscheduled stopover on a certain flight in the '80s than the town itself.

I guess the various reserves are tough to get a accurate population count. Cross Lake is almost certainly about 3x as big as what is shown in that list. Norway House is also similar in size. Those two communities should both be in the top ten for population size.

Native Reserves suffer from incomplete enumeration during the census, which tends to skew the numbers.

^ Good point, I heard that Island Lake (St. Theresa Point/Wasagamack/Garden Hill) area has something like 10,000 residents, but because they're divided among a bunch of different settlements (and the census issues wave46 pointed out, I suppose...) you don't really get a good sense of just how many people live around there.

According to Stats Canada the CMA of Winkler is now around 30,000 people as of 2016 and growing fast.

Winkler is a Census Agglomeration (CA) not a Census Metropolitan Area (CMA).

The CA of Winkler consists of 3 Census Subdivisions: Morden (city, 8,668), Stanley (rural municipality, 9,038) and Winkler (city, 12,591). In total, the 2016 population of the Winkler CA is 30,297. The land area is 870 square km.

The growth rate of Winkler CA (12.9%) was second largest in the province, after Steinbach CA (17.0%).

Reserves are more like municipalities than cities or towns. By including across Lake or Norway House, one should include Springfield or Rockwood RMs also.

I think these numbers also reflect the significant demographic changes going on and a white flight of whites to bedroom communities outside the city. South Winnipeg around the U of M is the real China Town of Winnipeg and the Asian and South East Asian make up now of South Winnipeg is really making the cultural make up of the area a lot different than even 10-15 years ago. I hope this doesn't end up being like Toronto in a few decades where each community is segregated to a large extent.

I don't think it's a white flight at all... the people going to bedroom communities are simply those who want to sacrifice location/convenience for larger homes and yards.

Toronto isn't a city I'd describe as segregated, anyway.

Looking beyond 2021, it's crazy to think that by the time the 2036 census results come out the populations of our cities and towns will probably be around,
Winnipeg 885,000
Brandon 63,000
Steinbach 28,000
Winkler 21,000
Morden 15,000
Portage la Prairie 15,000
Thompson 14,000
Selkirk 12,000
Dauphin 10,000
Niverville 10,000
And most unincorporated communities in the Winnipeg CMA will be in the 5,000 - 10,000 range

Winnipeg CMA 1,020,000 (not including surrounding RMS that may be included in next two decades)
Brandon CA 74,000
Steinbach CA 54,000 (including Hanover)
Winkler - Morden CA 49,000
Portage la Prairie CA 24,000 (including RM)
Thompson CA 14,000
Dauphin CA 13,000 (including RM)
Selkirk CA 12,000
Niverville CA 10,000

It won't happen anytime soon, maybe not even in my lifetime. I lived in the Edmonton area for a few years, and they said the same about Stony Plain (20,000) and Spruce Grove (35,000). However, the towns have still not grown into each other, despite experiencing rapid growth. The centre of both towns are just 8 km from each other. The distance between Winkler and Morden looks to be 13 km. I would not expect Winkler and Morden to grow into each other, until they have a combined population of at least 70,000 people.

I fine it amazing that Neeoawa and Minnadosa. Both fairly small towns have such large and complex business sections. They both have business sections more suited to small cities.

Strange that Neepawa has grown so much in the last decade, while Minnedosa has actually lost people. To me, they were always somewhat synonymous with each other.
