Great photo of suburban Main St. in 1948. I got lost in it for quite some time.

Very surprised to see that it was still a gravel road as late as that, esp. since at that time it was part of Highway 4, the Trans-Canada Highway. Probably safe to assume that it was paved south of Smithfield Ave. though.

Except for a few of the cars, the photo could just as easily have been taken in 1928, it would appear that little had changed over those 20 years, but by 1968 this scene would likely have looked much like it looks today.

There was a house at that corner, address was 104 Lombard. Listing disappeared from the Henderson Directory between 1917 and 1920. Don't be too surprised if you find the foundation!

Anyone know anything about 448 Hargrave (or have some old pics)? A friend just moved in and its a great space. She knew a little bit of its history but was really excited to learn more.

Yes, I'm quoting myself.

Seeing the black and white photo from 1978 on page 24 of the report reminds me that the city did a pretty extensive architectural photographic survey of Winnipeg that year. The pictures often show up in these reports. I'd love to have access to the entire archive.

I wonder if the units for sale in that building have been spoken for yet? They were on the market forever. It struck me that the building was aiming just a little too high in terms of the housing market, and it's just a little too far away from the busy part of the Exchange to justify that kind of price.

It was in development hell for a little while there. I remember at first they were trying to sell the bare units and the buyer finished it themselves. Then (someone new took over?) and was making some apartments and some condos. I didn't even know it was occupied.

Winnipeg's oldest private club opposes heritage designation

City wants to confer special status on the Manitoba Club, a Broadway structure built in 1905

The oldest private club in Western Canada is opposed to a City of Winnipeg effort to confer heritage status upon its 113-year-old downtown premises.

The city's historical resources committee has been advised to add the Manitoba Club's 3½-storey building on Broadway to Winnipeg's list of historical resources.

In a report to the committee, heritage planners describe the 1905 Manitoba Club as "an excellent example of the neo-classical and classical revival" architectural style in Winnipeg and note the building's brick-and-stone facades have barely been altered in more than a century.

^So the Manitoba Club is keen on historical preservation when it comes to the Upper Fort Garry site, but when it comes to their own building... not so much??
