DELTA, B.C. -- RCMP were Saturday morning trying to identify the body of a man hit by a car, then dragged underneath a bus for five kilometres across two British Columbia highways Friday night.
Deas Island Traffic Services RCMP Cpl. Bryan Fedirchuk said the body was discovered by the driver of a Coast Mountain transit bus travelling from Delta to Richmond, B.C., after he pulled into a bus stop off Hwy. 99. Fedirchuk said the driver, who is undergoing trauma counselling, felt there was something wrong with his vehicle and found the body trapped under the bus, which still had several people onboard.
Police believe the bus hit and snared the unidentified man after he was struck by a northbound car on Hwy. 17 at a location about 26 kilometres southeast of Vancouver. The male driver of the car called police around 10:45 a.m. local time saying he had returned to a spot on a highway where he had struck something, only to find a shoe and a jacket.
"The driver immediately phoned Delta police and reported because he couldn't find a person," said Fedirchuk. "Somehow, somewhere, during the course of the time he pulled over and made call, a bus passed through the area."
The driver of the bus told police he recalled swerving to avoid something on Hwy. 17 before travelling on to Hwy. 99.
The man's body has been sent to a Vancouver hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
"We don't know where he came from, we don't know who it is," said Fedirchuk.
