I highly doubt you will even get to see it in farther detail due to the black net. So -_-...

I am certain they will be working back there and they need protection.

How will they slide the glass in, it would be too tight for the workers to slide the glass in.

Those are some incredible pictures on the previous page. Can't wait for it to be finished. How will the observation deck compare to the one on the Twin Towers? I've been up there around 1998.

The views will be similar, yet at different angles. The observation deck itself will offer a different experience from the original, but it's basically the same thing - you go up, you look down.

1 World Trade Center offers warm welcome

By STEVE CUOZZO
May 25, 2012

Quote:

While bickering goes on over the iconic office tower’s crown, its street-level face is just as vital — not only to Condé Nast employees who will move in by 2015, but to the millions of visitors to the 16-acre WTC site. The “podium” design by Skidmore Owings & Merrill is the end product of a tortured history that included the dumping of an earlier scheme over costs and fears its custom-fabricated glass would too easily shatter.

The new image released by the skyscraper’s owners, the Port Authority and the Durst Organization, shows for the first time how its fortified base — a cube 185-feet on each side — will look to people arriving for work.

Preliminary renderings last year suggested a monolithic, corporate-looking wall despite a supposed “pleated” effect. But the image shown here promises a warmer welcome. It is articulated by vertical glass fins protruding from panels of stainless steel slates. The fins will be arrayed in patterns that will vary as they move up the facade. Perforated aluminum screens behind the steel slates will be illuminated, making the entire tower podium glow by night — a suitable companion to the lit-up base of 7 World Trade Center nearby.

I'm confused. Will the base now be straight as opposed to angling upward?

This. I actually prefer this design over the previous one.

Just a shot in the dark; but could it be that this whole kerfuffle with the spire is related to this? I mean once they evaluate the base (espscially as it is per these renderings), maybe they can figure out if the radome is feasible coast-wise.

What I'm triying to say is that on second look they might have enough funds to clad the spire again....maybe not as before, but at least in something.

Maybe?

it's mostly a maintenance thing, the radome would make the spire difficult to maintain. Maybe if it's redesigned.

I actually like the one on the right better. So, sometimes changes are for the better. Unlike the spire, the facade of the podium will be better, just like the design of all of the buildings is better than the original Leibeskind fiasco.

^ Yeah, the one on the left looks so out of place. The new one has more of a look of the original WTC,but the old base on 1WTC had the angles like the original WTC.
