It looks like a bloody suburban office park building with a story or two added on. Good god why can't we have innovative modern architecture like Rotterdam or Munich? If we are the most innovative city in the US then I REALLY weep for us all!

The concrete looks really nice, tho. Did a good job on that part at least.

Reminds me of Tadao Ando's work. Except the form it is taking, that is...

Have you seen any of Ando's work in person? Or Kahn's concrete... I'm thinking of the Salk Institute or the Kimball? Or have you ever had the opportunity to get inside Wieden + Kennedy? This is not incredible concrete poured from God's hands. If you ever have the opportunity to see any of the listed buildings above--particularly the ones that have concrete on the outside of buildings--take it.

awg: forgive me but I don't quite understand your last post. What do you mean "This is not incredible concrete poured from God's hands"? I have seen The Salk Institute and was pretty impressed. Are you implying that the concrete work for the Machine Works building sucks or is an example of good work? I haven't seen it (in person) so I don't have an opinion....I was just curious in your meaning because I am not the brightest candle on the cake and I don't quite understand your post. Thanks.

true, it was meant more tongue in cheek, but came out too serious. Hmm...

I think they tried, tho. Definite attention to detail spent on the form proportions... which they really shouldn't have.

Zilfondel--I obviously missed the sarcasm.

PacficNW--I was referring to the concrete of the Machine Works project as not being God's handiwork. The concrete at the other buildings is (and for those of us that work on buildings that human hand's pour, will simply be something we admire from a distance... sort of like Lamborghini's and movie stars).

MachineWorks building tops out in the Pearl

POSTED: 06:00 AM PDT Thursday, April 10, 2008
BY DJC STAFF

The erection of the steel at the MachineWorks Building has topped out, according to Grubb & Ellis Co. and developer MachineWorks LLC.

General contractor Skanska USA will soon begin to pour concrete decks and install exterior skin on the mixed-use office building at 1455 N.W. Northrup in the Pearl District.

The new development includes four levels of Class A office space, an LA Fitness facility and three levels of parking. The building is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver certification and has green features such as an eco-roof.

The building was designed by Group Mackenzie, and the brokers on the project are Eric Haskins, Dave Squire and Brandon Frank of Grubb & Ellis Co.

The building is scheduled to complete in December 2008.

Doesn't it seem ironic that about 1/5 of the building will be parking... and they're seeking LEED Platinum?

World's first LEED Platinum parking garage! Oh, the irony...
