The Future of New York City

Interested in what people think in regards to the future of the largest city in the United States, and arguably the world's financial center.

Will we see a population peak within the city proper with residents moving out to the suburbs and elsewhere?

Will it slowly begin to lose it's worldwide prominence and seep into the background behind emerging cities such as Dubai?

The Future of New York City?

Its simple really.

The United States will convert Manhattan Island into the country's maximum security prison.

It'll become a high-amenity bedroom community to a dominant industry 40-50 miles away, like San Francisco did after the rise of Silicon Valley.

More seriously, it seems as though New York's stature seems to be waning a bit, at least in culture and arts, as the people in those fields get priced out of the city. It's a large, prosperous, well-connected city, full of important people, that it's importance is unlikely to wither away, but it's absolute domination seems to be eroding slightly vis-a-vis Los Angeles, which, for a megacity, is somewhat affordable by comparison and feels more dynamic, culturally. There also seems to be a brain drain of New Yorkers to places like Philly, Detroit, and Portland.

I'm less familiar with the European situation, but overall, it doesn't seem like London or Paris' domination over arts and culture seems to be waning as much, even though cities like Berlin and Krakow are now the hotbeds for such things.

In East Asia, I could see Shanghai being the Top Tier city out there in 50 years in the way Tokyo now is, and Tokyo fulfilling the secondary role, I suppose, a la Paris or Los Angeles.

Yeah the pricing out I see as a boon to the city. Plus the exudes of folks to places like Philly and down South and to the West sucks.

But it does have its problems such as horrific traffic, and a housing shortage.

On the bright side, its still growing, and immigrants are still coming. The city is evolving. The old is being pushed out and the new is arriving.

Still one of the fastest growing cities out there as a percentage added out of its total population. Even amidst the residential boom, its not enough, and more housing needs to be built.

I think the focus on affordable housing will be key to retaining and attracting a variety of demographics and low/middle wealth categories.

Actually, a more realistic future in all seriousness is one that is massively strained in terms of transit. Major works need to happen with regards to rail and road construction/improvements. Overhauls with regards to volume of trains/vehicles on "X" track or "Y" road.

Transportation is the arteries and blood vessels for a city. Clog them too much and the city starts to have an attack that impacts its ability in commerce and to grow.

It's actually pretty scary to think about the potential effects on coastal mid-Atlantic older housing stock (which wasn't built to hurricane standards) if water temperatures allow hurricanes to hit the coast further north.

We need a rebalancing of real estate investment in this country. There are what, 10 supertalls currently being built in New York and 310 high rises under construction.

Same thing with the financial and legal industries.

More diversification from New York, to places like philly, Chicago, Detroit, would be a good thing.
