There's not much space for programming though, that's the problem. The Forks is also not getting an extra cent to maintain or program it, so it just stretches their already thin resources even thinner. And why would they try that hard to program anything there when they have plenty of better land and space available on their own site.

Yup. And they're not even going to bother trying to fundraise to build their "interpretive centre" that was clearly never happening from the start.

Just read the article...

"Gray said he hopes construction of the first phase of the facility will start in the spring and the entire complex completed in four years."
How on earth can a building that small take 4 years to build? What is the first phase going to be? A vestibule to nowhere?

Also the funniest/scariest thing about this whole plan is who is going to cover the operating costs of the centre? They can't even cover the costs of their outdoor park.

I would strongly challenge that the Friends "vision" for Upper Fort Garry was ill conceived. It always seemed like the "Friends" and the membership of the neighbouring "Manitoba Club" had some heavy overlap, almost to the point where the Friends were exclusive club members but that is just speculation on my part.

My taking over the old curling club, gas station, City of Winnipeg office building, etc. and turning it into a public park behind the Manitoba Club they effectively gentrified the area around their club and got a nice park paid for with tax payer dollars out of the dealer. I would even go as far to suggest that designing the park so the space is nearly unusable for any organized events might actually have been one of their goals.

Oddly, I do not have the same confidence that Fort Garry Place will finally get the cable car connection from the revolving restaurant to The Forks.

Yup!

Though it was proposed by Fort Garry Place developer Martin Bergen. It wasn't taken too seriously outside of, well, the local press.

The upper level Bell MTS store shut down. I mean it was inevitable but leaves another retail vacancy in the mall.

There's also talk about the IG call centre they run out of the 2nd and third floor offices moving back into the head office since there is more room after recent layoffs/retirement packages. They've had a few break ins and there are employee concerns for safety for those working the shifts that end later in the evening.

Didn't they have 3 locations (2 store, 1 booth) in their since the merger? Not really much of a sign, but yeah, another vacancy.

Of note, Portage Place quietly rebranded in January and it looks great. Has yet to be reflected anywhere other on their website/social media – but it may be a hint that some changes are around the corner.

I noticed the change on the store directories in the mall. Agreed it looks good.

^ They came up with a new logo once before, maybe about 5 years ago? They used it on signage for a while, then they reverted back to the old one. Now there's another new one... weird. It does look good, though.

Keep in mind Portage Place changes ownership almost as frequently as Jets backup goalies get concussions in practice...

It has had three owners in 31 years by my count. Peterson Investment Group has owned it for well over a decade.

Yet it is still trapped in the 80s.

That's unfair. The book store, Black's Photography shop and theatres - all rendered obsolete by post-'80s technology - are gone.

How many women want to spend all that time applying blue eyeshadow, inserting shoulder pads, blow drying and teasing their hair just so they can feel adequate shopping there?

CBC reported that at the downtown safety summit going on in town, Police Chief Danny Smyth called for shutting down the Portage Place bus shelter on Portage Avenue. He said something to the effect that police are there on a daily basis dealing with assault, robbery, etc.

It's kind of depressing because the narrative for some time now has been that downtown's decline is over and that things are on the upswing, but there are clearly still some trouble spots festering and getting worse.

He also noted some other trouble spots:

Quote:
The chief also identified several challenges police face downtown. He singled out Portage Place Shopping Centre, and in particular the bus shack on Portage Avenue and the promenade behind the mall, as major trouble spots.

Smyth said other trouble areas include the bus shack on Vaughan Street and the Millennium Library and surrounding area.
It's sad to see the Millennium Library on that list. It should be a safe place for people to read and study.

Sad, but reality has to be embraced, and change has to occur.

Libraries have become de facto homeless shelters in a lot of cities now. Ironically millenium library also seems to be a popular hangout for juvenile delinquents who need a place to bum around during the day - skip school so you can go hang out at the library ....
