In Halifax they are about to start on the tallest building to be demolished in the city. The Citadel Hotel only has around 11 floors:

Here are the replacement buildings (the grey tower on the left is also new):
The Citadel is an amalgam of different building extensions built from around 1963 to 1980. Here's a photo of the kitschy 70s-style lobby:
I won't particularly miss the building, but it is interesting how rare these spaces are becoming. I remember when this style was the standard for tired old buildings and everybody eagerly looked forward to gutting them and making everything brighter and shinier. These places had zero retro appeal and now they are mostly gone. There are few if any places in Halifax with untouched interiors from, say, 1976. I can easily imagine how somebody in 1962 may have wanted to tear down as many aging pre-war buildings as possible. Those old buildings became worth protecting partly because of their scarcity, which only happened by the 1980s or so. I am not sure we will be much better when it comes to preserving buildings from the 1950s-1980s period, and there are plenty of fad architectural details being put on buildings today that will attract wrecking balls in 2051.
