Summit Hotel

built 1965, demolished only 24 years later.

I was thinking the actual non-silo tallest demo'd in Calgary might have been the former court of queen's bench, which looks to be 9 stories.

but it looks like the Southam/Herald one is a bit taller. Not sure if there was another office tower taller.

Here is a video of the CN building being blown up. And of course, the idiots of Youtube are arguing about the destruction of the World Trade Centre, because we all know that was an inside job, just like this short, stubby, ugly little building in London.

It housed a lot of equipment for CNCP Telecommunications, in what was the old CNR building.

In Halifax they are about to start on the tallest building to be demolished in the city. The Citadel Hotel only has around 11 floors:

Here are the replacement buildings (the grey tower on the left is also new):

The Citadel is an amalgam of different building extensions built from around 1963 to 1980. Here's a photo of the kitschy 70s-style lobby:

I won't particularly miss the building, but it is interesting how rare these spaces are becoming. I remember when this style was the standard for tired old buildings and everybody eagerly looked forward to gutting them and making everything brighter and shinier. These places had zero retro appeal and now they are mostly gone. There are few if any places in Halifax with untouched interiors from, say, 1976. I can easily imagine how somebody in 1962 may have wanted to tear down as many aging pre-war buildings as possible. Those old buildings became worth protecting partly because of their scarcity, which only happened by the 1980s or so. I am not sure we will be much better when it comes to preserving buildings from the 1950s-1980s period, and there are plenty of fad architectural details being put on buildings today that will attract wrecking balls in 2051.

The largest in St. Catharines was a crusty 70's building that was the residence for the Mack School of Nursing, an 11 storey building next to St. Catharines General Hospital. Demolished in 2002. I cannot find a photo of it anywhere, best I can do is this:

www.niagarahealth.on.ca

It was demolished to make way for the Niagara Regional Cancer Centre.. then they decided to build that somewhere else, so the site is now a parking lot. Good job people!

I never liked the look of the BMO building on that corner of Edmonton, and now I REALLY don't like it knowing that they knocked down such a great building for it. Such a shame.

Found another picture of it. 1911 Tegler Building:

From EPL's Lost Buildings collection http://www.epl.ca/photo-collections-detail?id=40

Picture of the corner today off of Google Maps. Definitely a loss.
