I love her and so do my children.

One my kids actually sang her song La Chocolaterie in front of everyone at a school concert.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Kevin Parent. He's been a very popular contemporary singer in Quebec. He's actually an anglo from the south coast of the Gaspésie but his career has been mostly in French. Has been quiet in recent years.

Coeur de pirate has been mentioned already in this thread, but maybe not this show at Massey Hall in Toronto from 2014. It makes for a good introduction to her...

Strangely she was youtube's recommended follower after a punk band from France. (She also sounds a lot like the girl from Monsters and Men.)

Her new album comes out next week and features many songs in english. She's always sold out when performing in Toronto!

Yeah, she's trying to break into the anglo market. Her summer hit is playing on the radio in both French and English these days, according to my kids.

Based on the video her spoken English is very good. Of course, she went to Brébeuf, the number one private school in Quebec!

I'm not sure it qualifies as "contemporary," but a remake of Straight Outta Compton was just made in Compton, QC. Click here for the original video.
