All red now!? I spit my latte all over my copy of the New Yorker when I read that.

Yes, I have now posted pretty much this exact line on one other forum and twitter. I'm probably going to put it on facebook also.

Oh. Well that makes things interesting. I'll have to tell my dad about this....I swear half the reason he goes to Totem is for the free popcorn.

The same was true before those Quebecois had their way with her ...

During the summer there was even a staff member whose only job was to maintain the popcorn ... and clean up the spilled stuff. Not sure who is messier - contractors or toddlers.

Re: Bridge Paint

Could they do plastic thermoplastic like they use for road markings on the interior? It would gleam! Only issue would be the tightness between the steel and the plastic, potentially trapping moisture. Oh, and I guess thermal changes if plastic contracts at a different rate than the steel.

I'm assuming you actually meant The Walrus.

What's The Walrus? Is that the Canadian versus of The New Yorker? I'm familiar with The Beaver, which they bloody changed to Canadian History Monthly or something due to the internet ruining life for them!

I think it's a huge letdown that the inside won't be painted white, though it should still be very bright in there.

How about driver training?

We need to reduce the amount of salt we use. Calgary has amped-up the use of road salts in the past 5 years. I want them to return to the previous amounts that they used. Too much salt means......dead trees and shrubs (which you will see all over the place now) concrete corrosion (which you see more now) and metal corrosion......not to mention an environmental catastrophe!

People are still going to crash no matter how much salt you dump on the road. When you salt the roads, people just crash at higher speeds!

We have seatbelts, air bags, ABS, traction control, traffic control devices, traffic calming devices, speed limits - and yet people still crash. Driver training won't stop people from crashing.

Zero salt = plenty more crashes. I've lived it. You do not want to see it.

Way too much salt = environmental disaster (and cars rust out very quickly, to boot). I've also lived this. You do not want to see it.

There is a happy medium, eh? Of course people are going to crash, but that doesn't mean we should just give up and never use salt. I haven't seen any hard figures one way or the other, but Calgary seems to use a lot less salt than many jurisdictions. I think we're on the right track balancing safety vs the environment.

Maybe not, but being a good/attentive driver is the most important safety device one can possess. I'd rather be driven in a rusty junker by someone who has good driving sense, than a moron in the world's safest car. All those safety features you mention just dumb people down and make them over-confident anyway. Seemingly dangerous situations, like an untreated winter road, makes people pay attention and often drive with more care.

Not saying that we should get rid of salting roads of course.....just that I think kw had a decent point.

Well, as usual, I have went off on some tangent....... I just hope they maintain some of our pedestrain bridges. So much rust. I would hate to see the new peace bridge start rusting.

Just offer cowboy popcorn (kettle corn). That will reign them in. Honestly, I never think about going down to that hardware store......I have been there a few times but generally I forget. I will buy my next hardware from there. By shopping there, not only are you supporting Alberta, you are also supporting small business, the neighborhood, and Calgary. I am actually really happy that there is a private hardware option in the area.

Wait, this is about the bridge right? lol
