360 Model

Hey Guys, I know that many of you work for the city, have fun jobs in planning, ect. Does anyone have an idea for what we can do with our 360 Model in the Sales Center at 512 Rio Grande? It is a wonderful model that stands around 5' tall and I'd like for it to go to some kind of use. Any idea?

Maybe contact UT? Perhaps there is a department there that would like it.

The Skyscraper Museum in NYC...

Wouldn't it be cool to have an Austin building represented...?

No King Kong, huh? Okay, stop me if you've heard this idea...

You could gather up all of the other models in town, The Shore, The W, Spring, the approved and rejected models for the Green WTP, heck I'll bet even 21C has more than a few designs lying around.

Then you get them together and create a mock up of Delta City--New Detroit.

You assemble the model on one of the top floors of 360, with the skyline as a backdrop and you re-create the scene in 'Robocop' where the malfunctioning ED 209 blows away that poor OCP exec and his tattered body falls on said model of Delta City.

I'm sure you could find no shortage of RTF types in Austin who would jump at the chance to do it.

If you need a refresher, here's a link to a somewhat edited scene:

That model, along with the other condo models, seems like it is begging to be used in a mega train set at the Children's Museum.

Good idea! Or at the new Dell Children's Hospital.

As a former architecture student at UT (freshman year) I can tell you for a fact that it and other Austin models would be a great learning tool for students. One of my assignments was to go to a live construction site throughout the semester and take photos and make drawings of what was happening. A model of an actual building that students can go and look at would be perfect for the architecture program.

I was actually thinking of that. What would be really cool is if something like that could happen in Austin.

Surely one of the museums might be interested. Maybe the Austin History Center? It is historical since the building held the title of tallest in the city. And with the new downtown library slated to get a new home, the Austin History Center is planning on expanding and moving into the Faulk Library. So they might have the space for it.

AIA Austin has an architecture center near 12th and Lamar. They have a small exhibit space. Long term storage might be a bigger problem. I like the History Center idea.

Fun ideas guys. I'll look into some things on Monday and let you know what fate is to befall the model.

So what's happening with the model. It's still sitting in the sales office.

A subsidiary of GSD&M named Beast is now the in the space and they want to keep the model on display. It was too big and detailed for most of the groups I contacted, so I’m happy with leaving it there. The Mini 360.
