and now we impatiently wait as they piece the jigsaw puzzle that is the facade back together

glad to see the exterior finishes appear to be complete on the front part of the skyscraper

I am really liking the oldskool dark finishes look...it won't age as rapidly as a teal and tan colored building will...

it's a shame the stippling technique has faded so much on the blocks that you can barely see it - basically they draw a frame inside the block and then poke a bunch of depressions all over the surface to give it a rough look

you can see an example done on some of the restored portions of the parthenon:
But on the Parthenon isn't it being used to highlight where there's a discontinuity, because whatever would have been on that face is gone? Why do that on purpose for the original Wm. Thomas facade?? VERY different context and purpose.

In this case, perhaps they made a deliberate aesthetic decision to keep both darker and lighter stone.

For example, look how well it works in this image of Montreal from the main forum from Martin Mtl:

What a beautiful street^

I'm kind of okay with it being mismatched. We knew this would be the case all along, and there's no way stones of that age would ever look polished or totally clean. I think the important element to selling the historic facade will be the window treatments (I hear they're to be historic sash windows) and storefronts are handled. If these are pulled off well I don't think people will even really pay attention to the infill stones.

On another note, walked by and noticed drywall work is well underway inside, and aside from the hvac bulkheads they're leaving the concrete ceilings exposed. Thought this was a nice touch.

For example, look how well it works in this image of Montreal from the main forum from Martin Mtl:
I am just worried because they had to re quarry 2/3s of the entire facade, so unless they were able to keep the in between stones between the windows I just fear it looking extremely unbalanced, but as I said I will wait to see what it looks like when it's done.

Also the parthenon didn't just do it for that purpose, they also did it in between stones so they had a better grip when they were butted up to each other, but yes I know not the same example - they did this for more of an aesthetic effect. (I was referring to the stippled effect in that picture not the colour difference)

The colour difference on the parthenon is purely because the marble is new - as it aged it oxidizes, bringing out that ivory coloured patina.

Those tags are brutal. They need to secure the building a little better.

gah this is killing ma hahaha.. I want to see how the new elements look - the part they are putting up was still intact on the original drawing.. very anxious to see the pediments..

I'll try to copy this image onto every page to so we can compare it to what it originally looked like in its prime:

also here's a nice aerial shot for you guys - a bit old but still a nice angle

Gotta give both of my uncles and the rest of LiUNA props for this project. This should be great for students!

your uncles work for liuna? Cool! Keeping it all in the family eh?

I had my art in the lister block beside it when it held the lister arts gallery

one of my friends, patrick, black guy, is one of the security guards at the lister block too

I really love what liuna is doing with this whole block - I am excited to see the lister annex too!

My only fear is that the white on that skyscraper is going to age really badly and yellow..

Yeah, my uncle is the President of Liuna Canada and my Grandfather was before him, my other uncle and some other family members are in senior roles directly under him. This is all on the other side of my family. Both sides of the family are involved in some high profile jobs in the city. It's fun to watch.

now if only I could get my art into all the new developments in the city hahaha

But that's awesome! My only family claims to fame is that my uncle is a famous canadian artist who has sold artwork to some very high profile people, including european royalty, and that my great grandfather was the mayor of casselman, a city close to ottawa..

I really love the work they are doing - I think when it comes to building restoration the liunas (and their family) are the best there is in the city!

Guess it's in your blood!

Thanks!

I like this project because it's going to bring so many students to the downtown core. I think it's an excellent idea. I'm excited to tour it once complete. I like the design!
