I really like this building, such a great design, and it will be better than the heroine camp that has been set up along that block.

Yeah, that area is rough. This building should do a lot to improve it.

Went the site on the MAX today, and was surprised to see that steel was already almost up to the height of Bud Clark Commons.

Multnomah County Health Headquarters celebrates topping out

The final piece of structural steel was installed last week at the new health headquarters downtown. After everyone signed the steel beam, the boom crane flew it to the top of the new building strung with flags and an evergreen tree — an old Scandinavian tradition.

Since 2010 Multnomah County has been working toward replacing its 1923 McCoy Building, 426 S.W. Stark St., downtown. The county is building a modern and efficient nine-story building in Old Town Chinatown.

Its purpose is to consolidate the currently scattered Health Department programs and staff.

I haven't really studied the floor plans before tonight (I'm bored) but the restrooms on each floor are completely communal (no men/women). I'm kinda impressed and also curious as to how this works out.

With the way things have been going in the news with daily allegations of sexual misconduct, I wouldn’t want anything to do with commingled restrooms.

Photos: Multnomah County health building project progresses

A $91.4 million project to build a new headquarters for the Multnomah County Health Department is about halfway complete. Construction manager-general contractor JE Dunn is building the ZGF Architects-designed structure on a half-block lot in Old Town Chinatown along Northwest Sixth Avenue between Hoyt and Irving streets.

When completed, the Gladys McCoy Health Department Headquarters will have nine occupied stories with a mix of specialty clinic space, a central laboratory and office space for about 500 county employees. The building’s ground floor will have a retail space, a pharmacy, bike storage for building employees, and display space for public art.

Ground was broken in December 2016, and major work commenced in February 2017. Groundwork and pile driving lasted through last August, at which point steel erection began; the building was topped out in December 2017.
...continues at the DJC (no paywall).

I noticed this building the other day, it is surprisingly much larger than I was expecting it to feel like.

New $94.1 million Multnomah County Health Department headquarters opens in Old Town
Updated Mar 20, 4:43 PM; Posted Mar 20, 2:50 PM
By Elliot Njus | The Oregonian/OregonLive

Multnomah County on Wednesday opened its new $94.1 million Gladys McCoy Health Department Headquarters in Old Town.

The building replaces the Health Department’s current headquarters at 426 S.W. Harvey Milk St. in downtown Portland, which the county board voted to vacate because it was “cramped, inefficient and technically obsolete,” county Chair Deborah Kafoury said. The old building was also vulnerable to collapse in an earthquake.

The new building, at 619 N.W. Sixth Ave., is designed to survive a major quake, though it’s not built to a high enough standard that it could be expected to be in working order in the immediate wake of the disaster.

The new building will house administrative offices, as well as three specialty clinics, a central laboratory and a pharmacy to serve the county’s other clinics scattered throughout the county. Its ground floor includes a command post for use during a public health emergency, such as last week’s water main break that spread potentially contaminated floodwater through a Northeast Portland neighborhood.
