The City of Vancouver has received an application to rezone 1668-1684 Alberni Street from RM-5C (Multiple Dwelling) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District under the West End Plan. The proposal is for a 39-storey residential building including:
a six-storey podium;
94 market residential units;
a floor space ratio of 10.7;
four levels of underground parking with 180 vehicle parking stalls and 120 bicycle parking spaces; and
a building height of 117.3m (385 ft.).
A few tweaks have been made to the proposal that was presented at the June 12th pre-application open house. The FSR has been reduced from 11.3 to 10.7. There has been an accompanying reduction in the number of family units (83 to 81) and parking stalls (192 to 180). While the top floors have seen further sculpting, the building height remains at 117.3M.
I truly like this kind of design, and especially for the far West End as it can identify with a seventies version of what the 2000s was supposed to look like. "The Jetsons Tower" as Vin coins it whilst hitting the nail on the head. This end of the West End could use lots of these.
Indeed it does have a "Jetsons" aspect to it .... but it's sleek and beautiful; IMO. And yes, First Baptist belongs in this genre.
Other cities are going post-modern. This could become a Vancouver trademark style. Why not?
A community open house will be held on September 21, 2017 from 5-8pm, at the Crystal Ballroom, Empire Landmark Hotel (1400 Robson Street), with City staff and the applicant team available to answer questions.
For those who are interested, here's a reminder of the open house being held (almost) today. I can't help but wonder if this will be the last open house held at the Empire Hotel.

Submitted a comment in favor - thanks for sharing the link. I know it's not the most controversial project, but still good to remind city hall that there's support for new strata-titled towers (unfortunately now the most-maligned type of new housing.)
Here's photos of the model from the last open house, which apparently is also the last event to be hosted in the Empire Hotel. I thought I had a shot to match the rendering, but I must have overlooked it. The project goes to UDP for the first time on October 4th.
the empty lot in photos 1-3 is the whole foods parking lot...I was standing there this week looking at the existing buildings, it's going to be quite the change to the area.

What is represented by the model of the 'glass' building next door to it, please?
