In other news, I drove by the newly opened Elyton Hotel on Sunday. Not only did I notice that the restaurant was packed, but the sidewalks were busy with people. The 'Heaviest Corner on Earth' seems to be alive again!!

There's two pieces of digging equipment on the site For U.A.B.'s College of Arts and Sciences building at 10th Avenue and 14th Street South.

And to think, this was held up for so long mostly because some dude was upset that it would block his view. I tried to, ahem, see it from his perspective and barely for a moment thought this would stick out a lot amongst the shorter neighboring buildings, but these renderings confirm, at least to me, that it fits in just fine.

This was being held up because of an F-ing NIMBY?!

That is the word on the streets. Some guy that has a nearby practice was itchin' about it blocking his view and filed a lawsuit. It got tossed out of course but he was able to delay it for a long time.

Another project in southside, a mixed use project. Hopefully the restaurant, a "national chain" will be something new and noteworthy. Considering who is behind it, I have a feeling it will be.

Tourian- I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the design. It is kind of a cross between the original classroom buildings at UAB and something on the beach in Panama City, neither of which are appropriate for that location. Surely we can do better!

I've thought the design for the location was totally inappropriate from the beginning. That parking lot...

Yeah, I was a bit confused when I saw it, thinking maybe they just hadn't taken the wrapper completely off, like it was packed in cellophane and Styrofoam to protect the prettiness underneath. I haven't seen it at night though, IIRC it is supposed to have some sort of unique light feature.

That's okay though, I can get over it because it is only 5 stories and isn't meant to be fancy, but a place for parents staying with kids/people who are staying at Children's or UAB. They can save all the fancy for the multi-story 5 star flagship hotel that will be going up at Uptown within the next few years...I hope.

Word on the streets is that it will be a Panera Bread under the new southside project.

Project Sunrise finally become official. This is a big win for the metro and will hopefully bring even more suppliers that might make us more attractive to Toyota for their new plant.

We really won't know what the economic multiplier will be until we know how many vehicles they plan to make here. It is possible they could just utilize existing suppliers in the region or nearby, particularly if they will be producing a relatively small number of vehicles initially. We will see😀

That is such good news. The northeast part of Birmingham's urbanized area has been in decline for way too long. I was actually out on the AL 79 corridor just an hour ago and was depressed at how rundown the it is.

This is a big win for Birmingham's population future, too.

Several more sections of the tower crane were put into place on the Highland Avenue project.

Yes it is. The airport end is rundown espescially. The 422 end starts to look better because it is all commercial and light industrial. There was a story about a grocery store anchored shopping center for way out on that end as well a while back. I'm guessing autocar will put that back on track.
