A lot of work had to be drive all the pylons that are going to support the structure all the way down to bedrock. The actual act of putting up a structure take less time than site work, from what I'm seen with all the major construction projects that have gone on in this town.

I was hoping in the future they could bowl over the Lurleen Wallace Blvd "median" with an extension of Interstate 359 all the way to the river bridge, but that doesn't really jive with the master plan.

Wow!! It's looking better than I thought it would. Any news/pictures of the progress on the federal courthouse?!

I'm anxious to get back to school. Can't wait to see what's changed!

I don't have any pictures, but the site work is done. The frame (or whatever you call it) is already halfway up. The work on 21st Ave is finished and the street has reopened. The work on University Blvd is almost done. They've extended the grassy median two blocks eastward. I think they should have the grassy median go all the way to Queen City Ave.

Northport hotel may be built by late 2011

Quote:
A 107-room hotel on Northport’s riverfront could be completed by the end of next year.

The Hampton Inn and Suites hotel, which was anounced earlier this year, is planned for the old gin site property at the end of Main Avenue in downtown Northport. The project is in the design process, said developer Todd Palmer. Although no construction date has been set, once construction begins it will likely be done within a year.

“So far, the interior design is about 20 percent complete, the architectual design about 75 percent done,” Palmer said.

Palmer said he hopes that construciton will begin later this year.

Originally, there were plans of two restaurants and possibly retail on the site with the hotel, but because of parking, those plans were

scrapped. There will be retail shops across the street and toward downtown, but none on the hotel site, Palmer said.

Unlike previous plans for the area, the Hampton Inn will not have parking underneath the structure. Instead, fill dirt will be used to elevate the site about 7 feet, allowing the hotel to be level with the levee and giving rooms and conference spaces a view of the river.

The hotel development is moving forward, but there has been community opposition to the generic design of the hotel - the complaint being the proposed design is befitting a hotel in a business park beside the interstate, not the heart of a historic downtown district.

There have been community meetings between the developer and concerned citizens, but it doesn't seem the developer will be swayed to spend more money to make a more urban/historic design.

BTW, a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony took place last week (or the week before that) for the new Bryce Hospital facilities at the Partlow property. The facilities are still in design phase, so the actual groundbreaking will take place later.

Amphitheater construction to be completed this week

Quote:
The lights are on, the toilets flushing, the tiles laid. The roofing shines copper, the dark-green seating matches the shrubbery planted around its verges, and little remains but to sweep up, tweak a few last-minute items such as handrails, and hand over the keys.

Harrison Construction should finish work on the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater on Friday.

Amphitheater

It's nearing completion, and it's looking good. I took this from the Hugh Thomas Bridge today.

New amphitheater is finished! Kenny Chesney and Sugarland are already in the lineup.

Federal courthouse is progressing well, I'm hoping I can get a few pictures in the next few days.

Riverwalk expansion is underway.

All of that sounds great. I ahve been looking for new courthouse pictures for a while and finally found a couple. These, however, are from October.

Yea, the federal courthouse has come a long way. They're almost finished with the outside cladding of the building. They have yet to start the columns and all that stuff, but I expect that it shouldn't be long before they do.

It's starting to look really nice though.

The Woodlands apartment community along Hargrove Road received unanimous approval by the city council to add 123 new units.

Haven't been downtown in a day or two, but the pillars on the courthouse should be finished yet. The roof over them, I don't know about. I'll try and drive over there next time I'm out.
