OGDEN — Wednesday, Ogden’s 25th Street was named one of the greatest streets in America by the American Planning Association.

The organization ranked streets across America according to the “unique and authentic characteristics that have evolved from years of thoughtful and deliberate planning by residents, community leaders and planners. …(And) having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a vision for tomorrow.”

25th Street was recognized for having the most complete contiguous row of turn-of-the-century commercial architecture in Utah — built to accommodate tourists who traveled there by rail.

While the street hasn’t always had a family friendly vibe — opium dens and brothels catered to residents’ and tourists’ vices at the turn of the century — its current state of being welcomes families, tourists, outdoor enthusiasts and others. And, to improve access for pedestrians and bicyclists, the street is currently under construction to for additional pedestrian, bike and transit connections.

Roosters Brewing
Located in a rustic, 119-year-old building, Roosters Brewing Co. houses home-style classic food with an Italian, German and Mexican influence. The two-story restaurant features a large banquet room used to host parties and corporate dinners. Roosters hosts annual events like "Birds & the Bees and the Flowers & the Trees" party and “Utah Beer Festival.” Diners travel from across the country to eat at Roosters and many boast their bread pudding as famous.

The evolution of the area surrounding the intersection of North Temple and 600 West has been well documented here at The SLC Blog. Today’s In Pictures focuses again on this burgeoning intersection. The expansion of the Bridges at Citifront is over halfway finished. The first of the two new buildings looks nearly completed, while the second building is framed up to the third floor. Construction is nearly finished on the North Sixth mixed-use project across the street from Bridges. When both projects are completed, over 200 new residential units will be available along 600 West between North Temple and 100 South.

...The needed financing has been secured and the construction crane is back up at the Plaza between 200 and 300 South on State Street. According Greg Walker, the lead of
La Porte’s architectural team recently, construction should return to full activity by the end of this month.

At a visit to the site recently, the crane was running with a handful of construction workers on site. Over the summer rumors spread that the project was underwater and would
possibly be retaken by the RDA.

The project’s developers, The La Porte Group, officially broke ground in May of 2012. Since then, construction has been on and off. Over two years later and the steel only rises to
the third floor of what will eventually be 10-story building...

...While the project’s delays have been discouraging, the fact that project is again moving forward is good news for downtown Salt Lake. A large mixed-use project that enhances
the pedestrian experience and brings new residents will help make downtown a more vibrant place. The Plaza at State Street straddles emerging nightlife and cultural corridors along
200 and 300 South and has the opportunity to connect both, creating a vibrant district that complements City Creek and the Utah Performing Arts Center. Downtown Salt Lake is
maturing but to achieve its full potential, developers will need to take risks and create something different that enhances downtown walk-ability and quality of life. Hopefully The
Plaza at State Street will be a successful endeavor that encourages other developers to take risks and to create outside of the wood-framed stucco box.

That will soon change as two hotels are nearing completion, adding 334 hotel rooms and ground-floor retail to corner of 100 South and 300 West.

A surface parking lot and underutilized warehouse were sacrificed to make way for the new hotels. With the zero setback from the sidewalk and the inclusion of ground-floor retail, the hotels will bring an added street energy to an area that needs is. Construction of the Hyatt House is mostly finished while the Courtyard by Marriott is framed up to the third floor...

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Overstock (NASDAQ: OSTK) will break ground today at 1 p.m. MT on its new corporate campus, referred to as the "Peace Coliseum," which is anticipated to open during the summer of 2016. Overstock officials have said that from the ground level, the building will look like a corporate glass-and-concrete version of the Roman Coliseum, but from the air, the three-story building will appear as a peace sign.

The groundbreaking coincides with Overstock's 15th anniversary. In discussing why Overstock is embarking on the building project, Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne said, "We're in it for the long term."

The 231,000-square-foot office building will be located in the View 72 Corporate Center on 19 acres of land at 7295 S. Bingham Jct. Blvd. (approximately 930 W.) in Midvale, Utah. In addition to the central office building, the campus will include an amenities building, park-like open green space and a parking structure. The estimated project cost is nearly $100 million.

The campus will host several on-site amenities such as a cafe, fitness center, health clinic and daycare. Overstock is also considering an on-campus greenhouse to provide fresh, organic produce to be served at the cafe.

"It's exciting to be at a point where we can build the Peace Coliseum to unite our employees," added Overstock President Stormy Simon. "It will be the coolest place to work ever."

The developer is Gardner Company, the contractor is Okland Construction and the architect is EDA Architects Inc.

Byrne added, "The building will include contemporary design and will be constructed to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver certification with the possibility of Gold. The building's state-of-the-art heating/cooling system will utilize heat from the data center to heat the building in the winter and is one of the most energy-efficient systems for providing cooling in the summer. Because the building is adjacent to a Utah Transit Authority TRAX light rail and bus station, it will be exceedingly convenient for employees to take public transportation."

The Seasons at Library Square is now framed out to the fifth and final floor.. The five-story, 119 residential unit apartment building will include a fitness center, movie theater and a clubhouse. The building is at the intersection of 500 South and 300 East across from the Public Safety Complex and Library Square.

Season at Library Square is one of four residential projects under construction between 400 and 500 South and 600 and 300 East. Of those other projects, construction of the Newhouse Apartments is nearly completed, while construction is underway on the Encore and Seasons at Denver Street Apartments near the intersection of 400 South and 500 East.

Universities have long been a hub for progress. The Lassonde Studios, a student housing and “innovation hub,” reflects the progress happening at the University of Utah. While the new housing is unique in its focus on student entrepreneurs, the project also represents another progressive trend at the University: surface parking lots being replaced with dense development.

Groundbreaking for the Lassonde Studios occurred last week and the large former student parking lot is fenced off as demolition and site work begins. The project will be built east of the Carolyn Tanner Irish Humanities Building.

The five-floor building will house 412 residences and a ground-floor “garage”, a 20,000-square-foot open space with moveable furniture to accommodate diverse activities. The garage will include co-working space, private offices for start-ups, a cafe, lounge space and a prototyping area with 3-D printers, sewing machines, hand tools, laser cutter and more. The garage will be open to all students and managed by Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, a division of the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah named after Pierre Lassond, an alumni of the University of Utah’s MBA program.

The four floors above the garage will provide three types of housing as well as additional co-working, study and maker space. The living options include:
•Moveable living pods: Designers invented this type of housing exclusively for the Lassonde Studios. The pods will be 7-by-7 foot, private living areas with beds, shelving and storage. The pods will be moveable within a larger, multi-use suite. Each suite will contain bathrooms, a kitchen and community maker space.
•Loft rooms: Groups of students will be able to live together in a large, open space where they share creative space and a kitchen. These rooms will provide students with an urban lifestyle in the middle of campus.
• Single and double rooms: Students can choose standard rooms for individuals or to share with one other person. Groups of these single and double rooms will share creative space and kitchens.

Under the current master plan, the university plans to develop surface lots and underutilized space on main campus, making the university more urban with larger buildings that occupy less space helping to create a walkable campus that is both pedestrian and bike friendly.

The university is constructing two parking structures that will compensate for parking lost through the reuse and demolition of surface lots. The University plans to develop the large parking lot east of the Huntsman Center as part of the second phase of a 1,800-unit student housing development as outlined in the South Campus Housing Master Plan.

The Lassonde Studios building is one of many large projects under-construction at the University of Utah. The George S. Eccles Student Life Center and the new S.J. Quinney College of Law are expected to be completed at the end of 2014 and early 2015 respectively. Like the Lassonde project, the life center and law building replaced under-used and open space.

Construction of the Lassonde Studios is expected to be completed fall 2016.
