Some Random Shots of Ottawa

I did a fair bit of walking around Ottawa last summer. Should probably upload some of those photos.

1.A pretty bleak building that often looks really lonely.

2.Some views from a quarry or something. Not quite the escarpment, but still nice.

3.I warn you that I think facebook duplicated some of these, but I'm not sure.

4.I think they're all part of Lincoln Fields.

5.There's really a lot of apartment buildings out here.

6.No zoom.

7.Suddenly a city appears!

8.This street is like 10 lanes wide at some points. Proof that two way isn't necessarily friendly.

9.Lots of concrete in those buildings. I think it might be Ottawa's favourite material.

10.They also like these little lowrise clumps.

11. They're unique at least. Could use some proper trees I think.

12.Green is good.

13. It's a garden. My numbering system sort of makes every picture need a comment, so some of these aren't so inspiring.

14.Lots of these new houses in Ottawa. I'm not sure if they increase the population density or are just bigger.

15.I like this building. Also apparently those blossoms are a sign of a major winter. They weren't lying this year.

16. I think they must have an apartment up those stairs, though maybe it's just weird architecture.

17.Much older than it's neighbours.

18.Quite the fire escape.

19.I like the rooftop patio thing.

20.This is probably under construction by now.

21.I suppose it protects you from the rain as you go from one building to the other.

22.I like hills.

23.Lots of these new condo buildings out here.

24.Different styles.

25.Some older buildings too. Not that much older though.

26.Lots of shops, which is nice.

27. . . . Comment. . .

28.Nice and glassy.

29.This street remains pretty built up for a very long distance, but it hardly ever crosses another busy street.

30.They like this bumpy metal stuff these days.

31.I really don't understand why.

32.Transitway stops are so friendly looking.

33.This is another walk. Starting at the Museum of Nature.

34.Fire escapes. Love 'em. (Yes, I'm weird.)

35.I also like rooftop greenery.

36.Multiple levels of it.

37.Neo-deco or something. I like it.

38.Old government building.

39.Fairly short little canyon.

40.Why are there balconies? I like it, just confused.

41.Dowtown does look nice from this angle.

42.So tiny!

43.Tunney's Pasture and surroundings.

44.More concrete.

45.Islands on the river.

46.Okay, some of these aren't technically Ottawa, but I was in Ottawa at leas.

47.The library on Parliament is the best of Parliament.

48.I wish the previous one hadn't burned down.

49.I think this is a duplicate.

50.There are some nice old buildings in the downtonw. Sadly there's some very not nice things too.

51.Very small apartment building.

52.An interesting sunken foodcourt thing.

53.Another old little apartment building. I hope it has an elevator.

54.The museum again from another angle.

55.Another trip. There, I included Parliament. I think you have to when you show Ottawa.

56.A cute little bridge.

57. The Market. Also shows that one way can be pedestrian friendly.

58.It's a really nice area. I wish I visited more.

59.There's a few silvery churches around.

60.More Market.

61.One of Ottawa's nicer buildings.

62.Gatineau is growing.

63.Big concrete apartment block.

64.It's very imposing.

65.I should do a photo set of China Town at some point.

66.Farm and apartment blocks. Downtown is actually behind me though.

I have more pictures too. A lot more. I don't want to do more than one set a page though so that it doesn't take a month to load.

Thanks for this tour about Ottawa, Beedok!

Ottawa is very nice. I´ve visited it twice, and I´ve always liked it a lot, above all the Parliament and the city centre. I´m not used to see Ottawa´s neighbourhoods, and I see them interesting too. Ottawa is a charming city, indeed.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

I really must get back to my birth city one of these days.

Ottawa's shining star seems to be it's shorter historic buildings and row home like buildings. A Lot of those are just beautiful, where as the skyline and most of the high rises aren'nt especially attractive.

this looks particularly nice.

Nice tour. Cheers.

BTW the library is the only part of the Centre Block that didn't burn in the 1916 fire.

And yeah, I love that 'little' building on Wellington but it does look out of place.

That's what I was trying to say, but I really messed up. I meant that I wish the rest hadn't burned down because the only surviving part is the nicer than the newer rebuild.

Okay, this probably isn't going to get on the second page, so here's some more photos anyway.

1.Lonely Tree

2.I like that building.

3.Font reminds me of Pac-Man.

4.Is each floor an apartment or do they just really like balconeys?

5.Nice brick buildings.

6.The brick makes me think hosptial.

7.Rainbows are always a nice surprise.

8.Ottawa likes concrete.

9.Older rowhousing. (I think, I'm not certain of the exact definition of a rowhouse.)

10.New buildings mixed in.

11.Construction is booming it Ottawa.

12.What did I say?

13.Looks very old.

14.Red brick is nice.

15.A nice little building.

16.More construction. Also all of Ottawa is going to look like that beige building if trends continue.

17.I'm not sure what to make of this one.

18.Strange shaped buildings.

19.Not entirerly sure how the apartments work.

20.Why is that bumpy metal so darned popular?

21.I should get out to this end of town more.

22.Seriously though, those buildings are weirdly shaped.

23.I think these photos are out of order.

There's one more set that will come later on.

Hamilton and Toronto for that matter, certainly have their share of Commie Blocks but those ones in Ottawa take the cake. Gross.

I spent a couple years in Ottawa back in the day and really enjoyed it. I loved the fact that you could bump into political personalities like Eddie Goldenberg or Susan Bonner on the street or wherever. Yeah, wow, I know!

Anyway, I left because I knew I'd be stuck in Kanata or Barbecuehaven - forget getting a house anywhere in the city centre.

Keep the photos coming.

This makes the skyline look like a well-groomed hedge. I love it:

Number 16.

The funnyish house on edgewood. Is in fact 3 apartments. I lived on the second floor one with my family back before westboro boomed. It is a pear tree out front. The owners a greek family used to be on the first floor. But who knows now. That was 25 years ago. Hah. Thanks for that literal walk down memory lane.

Not what i was expecting at all!

I take it Ottawa was some sort of settlement in it's own right before becoming the capital? I'd always vaguely assumed it was planned in some way.

Nice pics.

Yes, it was on the Rideau Canal before becoming the capital. It was an important piece of military infrastructure when it was built.

^And it was a lumber town - not very glamorous but there you go.

Similar to the Australian situation, choosing the capital was a politically sensitive issue. Rather than creating a new capital (e.g. Canberra) they choose a town equidistant from both Toronto and Montreal. Ottawa was neither too English, nor too French, nor too close to the border with the Yanks. Perfect.

46) and 57) were my favorites. That crown, or whatever the technical term is, is really nice.
