Is Melo's still around? I heard it was under new ownership and pretty decent.

Also the Chateau Lafayette is a blast from the past. Spent many a drunken night there! Was definitely one of the more interesting crowds in Ottawa at the time.

No, Mellos closed and the restaurant next door expanded into the space. At one point, however, the Melos sign was taken down (overnight, iirc), seemingly by the owner of Melos, although I don't know whether that was ever confirmed. At the time, it was suggested that the sign had heritage protection and could not legally be removed (I don't know whether that was true or ever tested). So where the sign is now and whether there are plans for it are things I've not heard anything about. Perhaps others will know more?

Things are pretty lackluster here for interesting signage. The only ones that really catch my attention, that I see tourists posing in front of, are the street signs carved into stone - like at the intersection of Signal Hill Road and Battery Road.

My faves are Fog Off, because I love the middle finger...

Beyond that most of what comes to mind is even more typical. Lots of electronic signs on our suburban roads, attached to the sides of buildings and the like. A few old signs downtown, Duke of Duckworth and Halliday's Meat Market, etc. But nothing exciting.

I really love the Mello's or El Mocambo's kind of signage. Intemporal. Can't believe we put most of these down in the 90s.

One of my all-time favourites has always been the signage from «Chez Ben on s'bourre la bédaine» («At Ben's, we stuff our bellies»??), an epic cantine in Granby, QC. And like at Hutch's (posted on 1st page), the hot dog and the hand move !

The Honest Ed's sign's location is dumb. The theatre is now named after him but, it's not like he restored it. His son bought from a holding company that ended up with the theatre after Cineplex Odean's live production company went bankrupt.

I agree. There's a number of disused signs/neon signs like rotting away on buildings all across Toronto that would be a shame to see trashed. The Yonge BIA could afford to restore one a year and have them attached to participating buildings along Yonge

Even for an LED sign they could have done a better job integrating it into the corner. That looks like garbage.

The El Mocambo sign was taken down due to disrepair after the venue closed and was sold, however the new owners intend to open this summer and at some point the sign will return. One would hope concurrently.

I think it's to give the impression that the sign (and building) is some old neighbourhood fixture that's been around forever. I think there was originally going to be an askew "C" between the "O" and "K" that looked like it had fallen down (giving the project the Blok name, not Block). The neighbourhood is fairly gritty and in revitalization mode, with still a lot of broken down signs and rundown properties around.

It's kind of silly, but I dig it. I know the project architect and his sense of humour/playfulness.
