The need lines 2 and 3 to do things and breakout of their zone.

It's an NHL record, according to Sportsnet. NHL.com shows four players who have had 3 goals in their NHL debuts, most recently Derek Stepan of the NY Rangers.

It's a great debut but I hope other players also score, as the Leafs can't rely on one player for all their goals.

I thought this way before I had heard of Auston Matthews, but I've been thinking for a while that the days of the Leafs sucking all the time will be coming to an end.

If you look at contemporary global trends in pro sports, these days teams in countries' largest cities are rarely weak and are always at the very least competitive.

Check out most countries and you will see the largest city's team, even if it had many lean years, is today pretty strong and near the top.

This is probably due at least in part to the increasing concentration of wealth in the world's biggest cities.

So look out for the Leafs!

Crappy goaltending
Questionable refereeing
Some players Understandably out of sync
Poor D pairings and selections.

The Oilers can enjoy this night, but the Flames will be much better next time (and hopefully the Refs smarten up).

McDavid is one good player, though Elliot should have saved his first goal, and the penalty shot should not have happened.

This may be a radical opinion, but I think Matthews might be pretty good

Ugh Oilers. Still such a lousy team. 40% face offs. Out hit for two periods. Two short handed goals against. Outshot badly. All would usually add up to a bad loss and not 7-4 wins.

One game does not a player make but that second goal was ridiculous. Matthews worked harder on that shift than I've seen any Leaf player work in the last few years. Should be fun to watch.

That penalty shot was ridiculous, great move by McDavid though, the kid is going to be unreal. Elliott better get his shit together, Hiller would have stopped more pucks!

Looking forward to the game tomorrow night, glad I don't have a 2 hour ceremony to sit through haha.

For some reason, there were about 1500 unsold tickets for the Sens-Leafs game in Ottawa last night.

Opening night, Auston Matthews, the Leafs (one of the best draws for Ottawa, through thick and thin), and lots of media interest...

It's a good time to quote Cliff Fletcher and laugh at him:

Most US cities would love to only have 1,500 unsold tickets.

McDavid had a great game. Penalty shot should never have occurred if refs had called the oilers for hooking on Johnny, brutal non call resulted in McDavid breaking away, would have been turning point in the game except that Elliot sucked so badly in goal it didn't matter!

Sure, but small(er) crowds are not inconsequential for a Canadian club like Ottawa in today's NHL. What with the low dollar and all.

Even with all of the factors I mentioned, last night's game was below their yearly attendance average for the past 10 seasons.

Is that still with the lowered capacity of CTC? I seem to recall there being plans to lower capacity with boxes and other amenities to prevent non-sellouts from happening as frequently as they do in Ottawa.

It doesn't help that Ottawa's arena is in the middle of nowhere and takes forever to get to on a good day. It's going to be swell when all Canadian teams have their major arenas in their Downtowns like they should be.

-----

Tremendous performance from Matthews last night. Marner played a hell of a game, too. McDavid did his thing and none of the goalies played very well for any of the Canadian teams

:
The Citizen article by Bruce Garrioch talks about the crowd as if it was far from a sellout.
