Funny how that's now the trend again. Nice pic of Polo Park, still dominated by good old Winnipeg retail names, Strain's and Perth's and Genser's, along with Simpsons-Sears.

Winnipeg used to be so underdeveloped in terms of major indoor malls, with only Polo Park and Garden City for a long time, and then the relatively small Unicity. That was probably testament to the relatively strong downtown shopping tradition. But when St. Vital and Kildonan Place opened more or less simultaneously in 1979-80 downtown was quickly headed for life-support.

In Polo Park itself there is a little display surrounding the Polo player statue in the south part of the main floor. The photos go from when it was polo grounds to the open air mall to being enclosed the major expansion in the 80's to present day. Not a bad little timeline set.

Polo Park

Thanks. I had been trying to remember exactly where things were in the photo I posted at around page 51 so this was very helpful. I was living in the States at the time but came up to Winnipeg and Saskatchewan in the summers. Anyone remember in about the early 60s the trampoline place on the Polo Park Centre parking lot? It fronted (a bit back) on Portage Avenue and had pits dug out of the ashphalt with tramps stretched over them. I believe the next summer it was gone without a trace.

Interesting that this one has the policeman standing in his circle in the middle of the Portage & Main intersection, just like my shot on flickr from a few years later -- I guess that was one of the features of the intersection for a long time:

Interesting shot of the front of the Trust & Loan Co. Building. I've never seen as good an image of its facade -- obviously terra cotta.

Neat shot of LB Foote's office on Main/Graham.

I was being sarcastic about Polo Park by the way. What goes around comes around.

Vince Leah wrote how a traffic bobby at Portage and Main was a regular feature in the 1920s. I've also seen photos of Higgins and Main and Logan and Main from around that 1915-1930 period, where traffic cops were standing in the intersection.

Speaking of long-lost terra-cotta fronted gems, here is a photo of the eight-storey Cassidy Building, and other Market Avenue buildings, getting ridding to make way for the brutal and Brutalist Manitoba Theatre Centre and adjacent surface parking lot.

Here's an east of Main residential holdout, on the corner of Rupert Avenue and Lily St., circa 1970

Ok, Adrian, is this caption correct saying that this is 79 Hallet? The article says this was the residence of John Norquay, but he lived at 73-75 Hallet, not 79. I don't think this is 79, do you?

Anyway, more pictures found today:
