PHILADELPHIA | South Street Bridge Reopening!

The South Street Bridge Re-Opening
On this day, November the sixth of Two-thousand and ten, the South Street Bridge, a structure which provides connectivity between Center City and University City along with a killer view of the Center City skyline, was reopened to pedestrians (auto traffic will be permitted on the seventh). The design of the bridge was a major sore spot for many Philadelphians. Complaints ranged from a bland design to lack of pedestrian amenities and bike lanes, to name a few. But after near two years of construction , the damn thing is done! To mark the occasion, South Street merchants held a small fair with food and drink and other assorted goodies.

How colorful.

Looking south on the Schuyikill River and Expressway.

Franklin Field as seen from the bridge.

It's a media circus!

Don't run with these.

The actual scissors for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Finis.

good - bike lanes and usable sidewalks should be mandatory on such vital, inner-city bridges (and roads). who's behind that god-awful neo-historical infill, though?

It's great to see that bridge open again and cool pics of the event. Yankee, they should actually start construction of a boardwalk that will wind up south of the bridge. Kingofthehill, the simple answer is Toll Brothers.

Wow. Looks like G-Ho had quite a party down there, and a beautiful fall day at that. Sure wish I could've been there!

Great set Swinefeld but those rails really dont belong in the city, seems more suitable for Bucks County pasture.

now this is a tug on the ol' heart strings.

boy, nancy at ants pants sure did grow her hair down long. and i don't think i've ever seen any finger pickin' at the persian rug store. do they still have the pic of the comcast center rendering in the window?

i do miss the old hood sometimes. g-ho, center city in general and the west end of south street in particular, hold some of my fondest memories from the 215.

that new bridge, the views and the bike lanes aside, is a colossal disappointment, though. oh well.

Looks like I rolled out shortly before you got there, Swiney. I know some of the flourishes aren't done yet but the design certainly lacks warmth. At least the technical problems the old bridge had have been resolved (especially the Intersection of Death).

Well, at least the famous view is back.

someone (lame brain) has to ask the question, so it might as well be me (guilty, as charged):

so, where do all the hippies meet now? South Street Bridge?

nice show, it was necessary for the bridge to be reconstructed but i see no unique aesthetics, just standard construction. did they include the the mini structural towers as seen in this pic below

haven't seen the area lately and didn't see them in the pics. (doubting it)

They'll be done in June, tower. They're replaced the former towers/viewing perches.
