I don't see that as a problem

That's why I said it would be better with larger floor plates and put more units in.
And I know a lot of people that work in lower paying server/retail jobs for example that rent units in new condos in coal harbour and yaletown. So knocking down those shit holes and replacing them with new builsings can stil provide housing for lower income ppl. And if they can't find anything downtown they will just have to live elsewhere and commute

I'm a student and live in a shitty 3 storey walk-up in a prime Kitsilano location, but this city won't get any more affordable in the long run by preserving low-density structures near downtown. New units will always cater to a higher-end portion of the market because they have the property of being new, but over time they filter into other categories. (This might not hold true for the most luxurious properties like the Trumps and Shangri-Las of the world, but it's been shown to hold as a general principle).

Yes, but their quality of life is severely detrimented by the percentage of income allocated to housing.

I disagree. With a couple of roommates it could cost lower than some old west end apartments

Aging shitholes will collapse on the renters one day. They need to be replaced eventually. These new condos will one day turn into shitholes anyway, so why fret their constructions now? There is no such a rule that everyone will be able to afford everything, but hey, unless you're born a handicap, it's a pretty equal platform out there to compete for your keeps.

Anyway, love this type of building to replace the old buildings in the West End and everywhere in the Lower Mainland eventually.

Exactly. Or their parents help them with living expenses, or they live with roomies or drowning in debt. Or all 3. Being in debt or getting help from family are not usually talked about with friends and acquaintances, theres a bigger picture at play.

As for this building I think the courtyard and entrance look great with the other vintage buildings in the area.

Absolutely love this building.

Great infill, and a model for how to build the WestEnd.

Wonder what pricing looks like?

Yes, but building up a ton of new buildings means that those units that were built 10-15 years ago will now not be able to command such high prices and there are a ton of those buildings, especially in Yaletown.

This project is a bit of a mystery on the marketing front. Rumour has it it is a private development that may not ever be released for general public sales.

I like this project although the trellis at the top is totally superfluous and looks stupid.

Wow, looking at those skyline shots, one can truly see what an out-of-scale monstrosity this project is. Good on the WEN for taking the fight to it.

I thought this was meant to be a rental building...at least that's what was mentioned in the development application.

Details, details... Maybe it will be rented exclusively to people off-shore.

Couple of weeks ago I went there and talked to a guy who was working on site (but not a construction worker). He told me after a couple of minutes that if I was interested he could give me a contact #, condos around $2-4 millions each. Don't know if the info is legit though.

Hm, I've been watching this building going up the past few months, but have had little to no luck trying to secure contact information for purchasing… Vamo, could you PM me some information on that contact? I have a client who wants to buy some condos and I think this would be a great property for him.
