Nashville Federal Courthouse

After a decade long wait, it looks very likely the proposed new Federal Courthouse for Nashville will be funded and begin construction soon.

It is designed by the late Micheal Graves who designed many notable, but controversial buildings around the country and world. Needless to say, the Nashville design evokes many reactions from followers of architecture and the built environment. The building will be built in the downtown district and will replace some building stock that is frankly unworthy of rehabilitation.

I will show these renderings without comment as to the design, as I would like to get opinions from people outside of Nashville who will look at it without preconceived opinions.

A scale model:

A rendering;

The interior of the entrance;

Please comment on the strengths or weakness of the design. I will give my comments later.

Thanks!

Unremarkable modernism. Nothing special about it at all, and it looks like a thousand other clones in cities big and small across the country.

In other words: Meh.

It's Nashville, what did you expect?

What does it being in Nashville have to do with anything? For the record, practically every person with Nashville ties, that has commented on the design of this (which is now ten plus years old) in the urban design message boards that I frequent despises it, myself included.

I expected something more along the lines of the neoclassical Schermerhorn Symphony Center or the Art Deco-inspired Davidson County Courthouse.

Why, what were you expecting?
