Here is a 14-storey skyscraper that was proposed in 1907, to be built on the east side of Main between McDermot and Bannatyne (where the CWB headquarters are today). It's the tallest pre-WWI proposed building I've come across. Would have been absolutely stunning if it were built.

You can read about the developer that planned it, and the controversy that arose (get it? har har) around the building's height here.

The 'This was Winnipeg' blog mentioned the Winnipeg Tribune today.

Is that an American flag dangling off of the side of the Trib building?

Yes it is. In 1958, the U.S. Consulate office was in the Tribune Building; maybe it also was when this picture was taken (which looks to be in the early 1920s).

was down getting a tour of the MTC today and I noticed that someone has raised the Canadian Flag on the Union Bank Tower - once the tallest flagpole in the British Empire

My grandfather owned the Columbus Lunch, in Columbus Hall (site of present-day Library), and fed the US Consulate officials, managers at nearby Eaton's and Tribune reporters from the early 1930s to the early 1950s. A real urban hub. Wish I could get some pictures of the restaurant and building. Our family was never great at taking or keeping photos. Can anyone help?

Such a beutiful surface lot has replaced the handsome Tribune Building; of course, by the time it was demolished, th efacade had been covered, "modernized", but I would still take it over the lot.

There was a postcard of the Columbus Hall on sale on eBay a few months back. I was outbid on it, unfortunately. Sorry I didn't know at the time that this was the site of the restaurant.

Never so cold in my life as when I was up on the roof of my house watching that. But it was pretty much the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

I think this picture of the Columbia Theatre (later the Fox Theatre) from the Peel's postcard archive was posted earlier, but I thought it was interesting that the Free Press picture was taken in the same spot roughly 70 years later.
I like the Peel photo because you can see the Starland sign in the distance already up, even though the Starland itself hadn't been renovated to its expanded size (which happened in 1921). If you look closely you can see it still has its old, more ornate facade.

Sad how those facades often got covered up, like with the Rex and, as is obvious here, the Columbia.
