This should be generating more excitement, but it's almost as if it's being built on the moon. Just one of the reasons I prefer these towers be built in cities. I don't care what they plan to build around it after.

^It's not so much that it is being built outside a currently developed area, but more that it is a more closed society in general. It's still human achievement, but not nearly as publicized and showcased as it would be in say Hong Kong or Shanghai. It is what it is. I'd love to see more detailed pictures and plans and photography from the area, but it is what it is. Hopefully like with the Burj the coverage will increase as it goes along.

I heard the UN is moving its HQ there. The eiffel tower is moving there soon as well. Elon Musk even decided he didnt want to go to mars anymore after visiting.

It's sad it is built in Saudi Arabia in the middle of nowhere, since very few people will be able to see this tower in real life. Only people who work there are able to enter the country and forreigners are not allowed to take pictures there.

People can't visit the country without work visas?

It was the 80s or so, but I remember when Michael Palin was doing his travel stuff they barely let him and one camera man in and they were heavily monitored.

I guess they got jealous of that thing in Dubai. I cant wait to see it in 3-D on Google earth. From the looks of that progress pic, it looks like when its done if any Saudi wants to get a good pic of it that they will need to be quite far away...and on a day where it doesn't look like mars or star wars or anything. If I went there and lied to them about working there and snuck a pic of it myself, I would post it all over the internet proudly. The only reason why no Americans are going to go fly a plane into it is because Americans are better then that. If Allah told them to blow it up in 100 years, would they?

I hope they give it some nice fireworks displays in the future... Actually they arnt about freedom so I guess not haha.

I thought I would make a post showing at what stage of development the Kingdom Tower is at the start of 2016 from top view via Google Earth.

Maybe one day these towers will probably be so common place that the normal skyscraper we've seen will be the equivalent of what tall buildings were in the late 1800's.

Zoomed out to show it really is in the middle of nowhere (but not for long):

Zoomed in closer:

Close up. Looks like construction is coming along nicely. Maybe about 25-30 stories up right now.

"Kingdom City" - only in Saudi would they even bother to name the warren they built for pressed South Asian laborers. They make it sound more like a gated community than a prison camp.

Agree. They keep building these monstrous towers and expect to create an environment around it. Isn't that backwards ?? That does not a city make.

I think the name is of the planned redevelopment that will surround the tower, not the current worker accomadations.
