(The streets crossing through Central Park actually do ruin the park a bit, it adds unneeded noise and pollution, plus makes it harder to get across the park)

If a 57th Avenue connection is added, it should be bus and pedestrian/bike only, and the land to the south be converted to social housing.

There's also the fact that Langara is a golf course, not a park? You'd have to redesign the course to allow for a road through it (see University Golf Club). You can't just cut across the fairways unless you want cars pockmarked with golf ball dents.

Cheapest way to accomplish this goal would be a single lane busway like Charleson. Could have it connect 57th to 57th wrapping around the southern tree line of the course. Set up some fences or adjust the greens accordingly, but wouldn't need to sacrifice too much space. Add a transit priority signal on Cambie, as well as automated ticketing for anyone driving on the road. Or add an automated gate that raises and closes to prevent drivers from entering. Cyclists and pedestrians already have the Lanagara trail that would be mostly parallel to this. Problem solved

Edit: South Vancouver does have a East-West service gap, and running a route on 57th would help reduce crowding on the 49. Fantasy territory, but a route from Metrotown via 54th in Killarney > Sunset > Cambie > Kerrisdale/Dunbar along 57th makes sense imo.

One set of Mark I should be sent over to display at the Railway Museum of BC at Squamish.

The collection can grow with the retirement of other Marks.

Worst 5 bus routes based on boardings:
1) 619
2) 614
3) 42*
4) 748
5) 179*

* = seasonal routes, so if you don't count them then add 749 and 618 to the list.

Most overcrowded bus routes based on trip % with overcrowding:
1) 345
2) 323
3) 335
4) 321
5) 393
The usual suspects 25, 49, 99, R4, 319 are 6 to 10th place respectively.

Worst 5 skytrain stations based on boardings

1) Lake City Way
2) Sea Island Centre
3) Sperling-burnaby lake
4) Inlet Centre
5) Lafarge Lake-Douglas

Those have been the standings for quite awhile, unfortunately 41st/49th have the UBCx dilemma. Metrotown, Oakridge, and UBC (and to a lesser extent Kerrisdale) are all major destinations... but there's basically nothing in between. And worse than UBCx, there's little-to-no viability for an above grade system, so it would be one long, expensive tunnel.

UBCx, then the Purple Line. The 99's had to wait for the better part of four decades, I don't see why the R4 can't.

Once arbutus/ubc extensions opens, the demand for R4 and 49 will drop as commute patterns change. They will still have high boardings but most of the demand will likely be from east of cambie.

All SoF routes. The 323 has been upgraded to an accordion bus and is planned to become an FTN route (the 393 is a rush hour bus with almost the same route). Increasing frequency on many SoF routes would help a lot.

The 321 will get better once the R1 is extended south past Newton Exchange - why they haven't extended it to the South Surrey Park & Ride already is a question I'd like to know the answer to.

Also the Burnaby Mountain Gondola. No surprise they're planning on any other upgrades to be BRT - they've got enough expensive upgrades to last awhile...

May 6th is a type of "late April" if you think about it.

Newly upgraded Phibbs Exchange opens for customers

Overhauled exchange provides better safety, capacity, and convenience

May 6, 2024

NORTH VANCOUVER, BC – A newly upgraded Phibbs Exchange opens today for customers – providing more space, improved lighting, and better shelter for North Shore transit customers. The overhaul modernizes the space, improves access to and from the exchange, expands capacity, and improves safety.

Completed improvements includes:

13 new bus bays with more space for customers
A new multi-use pathway for better bike and pedestrian access to the exchange
A new rain garden to modernize the space and improve drainage
Better lighting for improved safety
Seven new bike lockers and new bike racks
New commercial retail space
Improved bus stop shelters and more seating
Upgrded design to accommodate the R2 RapidBus

Phibbs Exchange is a key transfer point for North Shore residents and Capilano University students. The exchange is home to 13 bus routes, with over 5,000 customers who use the excange on an average weekday.

Phibbs Exchange is located on the unceded Traditional Territories of xʷməθkʷəyə̓m (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). As part of the upgrades, public art is being installed by artists from the Sḵwxw̱ú7mesh Úxwumixw and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ to honour the Indigenous history of the land. This art is expected to be installed later this year.

This $32 million investment was paid for by the Government of British Columbia, the Government of Canada, and the District of North Vancouver.

This upgrade was made possible by capital investments in TransLink’s 2018 Investment Plan. TransLink continues to work with all levels of government to identify sustainable funding sources that would allow for similar upgrades to other parts of the transit system.

The stretch from Metrotown to Oakridge is actually quite dense. If you check on censusmapper, the whole area has densities of around 60 to 90 people per ha over a very large area.

Be that as it may, it's all SFHs between Maple-Oak and Cambie-Willingdon; gotta grow that out before Vancouver warrants a second E-W SkyTrain.

I accidentally tapped my phone on the compass reader the other day on the bus, who do I go through to reverse it?
