Taipei Waterfront

Taipei Waterfront - Stage I
Ongoing
Taipei, Taiwan

The one kilometer-long site lies on the Tamsui River at the base of a newly planned urban corridor anchored by Taipei’s Central Rail Station. Our task at the Yan-Ping Waterfront is to transform the existing urban infrastructure into a new public space.  The current floodwall impedes access and separates the city from the waterfront. Our strategy of infrastructural urbanism enables access, creates public amenity, and promotes ecological diversity. To create a new waterfront park, the project begins by re-thinking the architecture of the flood control system. In place of the single wall at the edge of the city, a system of elevated levee structures organized by a serpentine crest opens the site to unimpeded access, and at the same time, creates a variety of spaces and programs at the waterfront edge.
