34th Street tower proposal calls for a facade of twisting balconies

Quote:
Danish firm 3XN has revealed a compelling design concept, with renderings showing a slender, square-shaped building with an undulating curved exterior. According to the firm’s website, the tower would boast an elegant stone façade at the street and lower levels, then “gently” transition to a glass façade.

The transition to street, the limestone, to sky, the glass, establishes a clear identity for the building, according to 3XN. The retail would be located in the basement and on the first two floors of the building. Located across from the Empire State Building, the tower at 4 East 34th Street would “contribute a distinctive, sculptural silhouette to the Midtown skyline.”

Floors four through 40 would have luxury condos, whose efficient layouts and high-quality elements make up for the smaller-than-average size. The breakdown of the apartments would be 40 percent one-bedrooms, 40 percent two-bedrooms and 20 percent for three or bedrooms.

The three types are stacked smallest to largest, letting the biggest apartments get the best views. Floors six to 12 will have three one-bedroom units per level, with two square apartments and one rectangular level on these levels.
