I find it a little nuts how the 401 EB goes from 5 to 3 lanes at Salem Road. 4 Lanes should continue at least till the new 412 interchange.

Maybe this wasn't done in the 412 project to avoid having people complain that the lane they were in defaulted to a toll highway? That is if the rightmost EB lane became an exit lane to the 412.

I agree that the lane drop is egregious there. I just checked the map. It seems possible to fit a total of 10 lanes under Highway 412.

===========

As for 401/404, is the access from 404S collector to DVP S permanently closed? Or is it only closed for construction? I'm trying to look up proposals on how this mess called 401/404 should be fixed but so far I haven't been able to find any design on it.

In the future the collector lanes will collapse through the 412 interchange. The ramp from the eastbound 401 to the northbound 412 is designed to support a complex freeway, while the ramp from the southbound 412 to the eastbound 401 will support just ten lanes beneath the ramp.

The 404 lane realignment is temporary, it's just for the bridge rehabilitation. The lanes will be reconfigured to their pre-construction alignment once the construction has been completed.

So much like 401/427N?

Any idea how 404S to 401 and DVP should be fixed? The lanes leading to both directions of 401 are constantly jammed even when there's no access to DVP through those two lanes.

Drove eastbound in the Kitchener/Cambridge area today - 6 lanes EB now open. Yay!

Nice! When I drove yesterday, the HOV lane was still coned off, but since the roads were more or less done, most people disregarded the 80 sign and hit 120 anyway.

I found it a bit odd. The first few hundred metres where the HOV lane will eventually be is indeed coned off, but most of the lines just indicate a regular lane. After the cones disappear it is just six regular lanes with two exiting and one ending at Hespeler.

Perhaps they are waiting until the WB work is done to implement the HOV lane?

Maybe 4 km’s too short for double solid line to be meaningful? When MTO implemented HOV lanes on the 427, it opened the southbound one unilaterally. We’re still waiting for the northbound one to finish...

Maybe they will wait until the extension to Townline Road is done to implement the HOV portion

With that project under review, this is gonna be a long while... MTO is better off building the ramps between 401E and 8N and between 8S and 401W.

Drove WB from Cambridge to Kitchener today. Only three lanes open with everything else coned off. Looks fairly ready to go other than painting the lanes. The usual massive backup leading to the 8N exit.

Thanks for letting us know. I will definitely watch out as I’m heading back to KW tomorrow.

Up to date (as of Tuesday) photo of the 401 through the Mavis Road interchange. This photo looks easterly from the Creditview Road overpass:

Thanks for the pic. Been a couple years since I have been through that stretch and this pic just reaffirms my decision to hit the 407 whenever I head that way lol

I wish GTA West Corridor goes all the way to Guelph though. 401 through Milton is also bad...

It’s about to get widened as well. Construction starts in the spring I believe.

I thought that’s starting this month... At least there should be some preparatory work going on.

Does anyone know what’s going on on 401W between Mallorytown and Ebenezer (just east of Gananoque)? I saw images from OPP East twitter that ornge needed to be deployed but there was little detail on the crash. It’s also crazy that just a day ago, the eastbound lanes through the east end of Kingston were shut because of truck fire and subsequent fuel leak.

Ontario's most recent twelve-lane highway, the 401 through Cambridge. Construction has nearly been completed on this segment of highway:

These were taken last week.
