I remember seeing a story on the TV about the noise from pile driving. My wife took our son to the Fields Park and they started driving while she was there and they left. To be sure, it is VERY loud, but its really only a small part of the construction process and is over with quickly.

Not like the noise is a constant issue in the neighborhood.

If people want to make a noise complaint, why not make one over all the automobile traffic coming from the 405? Or the streetcar coming through so often? Where do people draw the line?

Haha, and the best part was the train horn blaring in the background while she was going on and on. I didn't have the nerve to point out her hypocrisy.

The train horns are far more annoying than the construction noise.

The pile driving is pretty brutal, but it's part of city life, and it'll pass.

I've always wondered how much people pay attention to the surrounding lots when they buy a condo. I think there's a corner condo in Eliot Tower on one of the lower floors looking straight into what will be the new tower that's coming to SW 11th & Jefferson. When showing that condo, does a realtor mention that the building across the street is coming down soon? I assume not.

The noise sucks, but it's temporary and it usually means change for the better of the neighborhood.

After this is built what's going to happen to the rest of the block? Will they divide it into two and extend Pettygrove or will there be a space for pedestrians between this and the future building on block 20?

I believe that they'll be extending the street, and building it to Pettygrove Green St [PDF] standards. The under construction climbing gym, the Overton and 1420 NW 14th also have a frontages to NW Pettygrove, so the green st should be a reality pretty soon.

The street face in front of the Freedom center already has already been built. Once the trees are mature, they'll do a nice job of masking that building.

Pettygrove

Block 17 will extend pettygrove between 12th and 11th and it will be a city street built to the green street standards.

Block 17 is only building a partial pettygrove street as block 20 will build the northern portion of pettygrove when that block is developed.

Block 20 to the north is a freestanding block independent of block 27 still owned by Hoyt Street.

My guess is there will be some sort of walkway between two buildings. I don't see Hoyt Properties giving up land for a street if the street isn't needed.

Bear in mind that most of the streets north of Hoyt didn't exist prior to the adjacent buildings. Using Google Earth you can see that even as recently as 2001 the streetcar line was surrounded by mud.

You can see the proposed street/sidewalk layout here [PDF - 121MB] on page 61.

EDIT - notice that portlandmaps has recently changed to show NW Pettygrove extending all the way to the Park. (Compare with how it shows NW Kerney in the light gray tones).
