Calgary Firsts: Looking to the Future

OK, so this is the place for prognostication, people.

Will Calgary be the first Canadian city:

- to be home to an NFL team?

- to host the World Cup of Soccer all by itself?

- to get a Harrods store?

- to have a tropical climate?

- to host a stage of the Tour de France?

- to have an alien spaceship crash there a la Roswell?

- to have the Dalai Lama take up residence?

- act as a special one time only guest host for the annual great pilgrimage to Mecca?

Any others?

Call me crazy, but doesn't this belong in the Calgary section? This really isn't a national topic, and I don't think it belongs in the Canadian section.

Calgary is the first to have a really large star ship replica (very futuristic) as a tourist attraction in Canada:

Damn, it's a little beyond the CMA.... so it doesn't count.

I'm not sure why this thread is here in the Canada section or what the purpose of it is, but since it is here...

I'm going to say that Calgary will be the first city to have a 1000' tower.

Calgary will also be the first city to have its football fans ride into the Royal York on horseback.

Don't you mean Calgary was the first city to do it? Calgarians are credited with turning the Grey Cup into a week long national celebration. In 1948, Stampeder fans descended on Toronto en masse. The much repeated slice of Grey Cup folklore tells the story of how Calgary alderman Don Mackay rode a horse into the lobby of the Royal York Hotel. When the Wild west came to Bay St. in 1948 with their chuckwagons:

It's become a tradition:

I kind of suspect that Acajack was sarcastically making a "Great Canadian Calgary Boosterism Thread" in response to the most beautiful metro thread. The suggestions seem to support that it was tongue in cheek.

More seriously, Calgary takes CFL pretty seriously, so I doubt the NFL would get a foothold there first.

Obviously....but I played along; hope you could see that.

I think a few people are pissed that Montreal was beaten easily by Calgary in that poll. The fact that we were dealing with such a tiny sample size that the results likely were skewed, does little to assuage their feelings. Every vote for Calgary was an audacious affront to the honour of Montreal. Yet another form of humiliation they have now been subjected to, so someone had to act out and get some justice around here. We can be "libre penseurs", so long as we think right!

I kind of figured that too and played along with it, but I think it's a bad precedent to set post these kinds of threads. I'd hate to see more threads like this based on posts by other forumers that like to boost their city such as..oh say..Nikko999 or Caltrane. Let's face it everyone on this forum spends mounds of time and energy boosting their own cities, that's the only reason the Canada section exists. The Canada section should renamed to the "Hooray for my city" section.

Calgary is now the center of the universe, and thus should stay here.

Maybe you should get GSP to punch out all those crazies who actually think that Calgary has more to love than Montreal.... that'll teach 'em. On 2nd thought maybe not, if he got his butt kicked it would just be one more humiliation.
