Open House Chicago 2018

I was able to attend my 3rd straight Open House Chicago event. 250 buildings were open to the public this year. I stayed at a hotel in River North and came in from Phoenix. I grew up in the Chicago area (Aurora & Oak Park) and never stopped loving the architecture the city has to offer.

All of these shots are from Saturday. On Sunday, we visited historic mansions and I'll post those in a separate thread tomorrow.

Here is my link to last year's OHC thread...

These pictures were taken with a Nikon D3400 with an 18-55mm lens and a 70-300mm lens.

The view from my hotel (Residence Inn - River North)

LondonHouse - The next several images were taken from the rooftop of this building.

The lighting was poor looking south at this time of day, but I wanted this shot, so here it is.

Very nice scenes! I would have liked to take advantage of the Open House events as well, but I made plans to visit out-of-town friends well before I realized I’d be missing out on the open houses. I look forward to checking it out next year.

What can I say ... Chicago ... second largest city of America.

I never understand why LA sometimes ranked as second.

Well, L.A. is statistically #2 in population, but Chicago will always be the "Second City" in the U.S. when it comes to "real city" attributes.

Fantastic pictures!

The last picture of Aqua with the American flag and the City flag of Chicago brought tears to my eyes. Literally.

Nice - I was surprised by the number of foreign tourists who came specifically for OHC. Hadn't really thought about other North Americans who I would not have noticed.

Ugh. I love Chicago, but come on. LA's one of the biggest cities in the world, and it shows. Chicago might be the 2nd most urban city though.

Generally we measure a city's size by how many people live there in the city limits and the metropolitan region. Not by how many tall buildings that have in it's core.

Very nice!

So, in like 2010 I went on a trip to Chicago with my family, by my suggestion. My dad has been all over the world, like all over the entire planet besides South America. He is from NYC but for some reason he never visited Chicago. After our visit he kept commenting that its the only city in America that comes close to NYC( I am assuming he meant in grandeur and urbanity), he was really impressed. I think thats the response that many people visiting Chicago have when not holding it up to some grand standard.

I visited Chicago some years ago, very beautiful. Much more urban then LA, but still have less inhabitants so that's why it's the 3rd city. I was surprised how small the downtown core of Chicago was in size, while the whole city/metropolitan area was huge!

Apparently Open House Chicago had ~100,000 people attend. That's pretty cool for an architectural event... Is anyone aware of other cities doing something similar?
