For those of us who actually live in the southwestern United States, we call it the "Southwest." The term is more than just a "generic" geographic direction on the map, it also signifies a distinct regional culture and atmosphere that exists here (the region) and nowhere else - it permeates everything. From the architectural aesthetics, local art, food, geography, terrain, etc.
