It's unique and we need more unique buildings, I'm all in for it.

Also, the visuals are a bit misleading, in that there are major development sites in the foreground and background, so it won't look quite so ungainly from most angles. You aren't going to see the entire tower anyways.
The garden type design is a reflection of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which made garden settings essential.

Oh hell yeah. This building rules. My brain tells me I should hate this, but I absolutely love it. I really hope they follow through with the same lighting scheme as in the renderings because that is fantastic.

That would require more floor space that they don't have. But it doesn't have to look like it does. They could always go back to this:

It will become a landmark on the skyline, despite not being one of the taller towers.

People will flock not just to the observation deck, but to the drop ride over the skyline as well...

I like it for some reason especially at night but totally understand why others dislike. It's not another blue box and will stand out.

Would be cool if someone did a render of what it looks like from the south and from the ESB.

Does the height look too exaggerated here in this rendering to anyone else?

Very Different Indeed! I am glad to see New York is getting an "odd/weird" super tall. It may turn out screamingly ugly or ironically beautiful. Either way it will add great diversity the the ever expanding plateau of new supertalls on the Amazing New York Skyline.

I give it . But truly understand the . We will all see the finished tower. The devil, and beautiful outcome I hope, will be in the details. And those might come at the very last moment of the build!

And as said before...This tower is just ripe for Astounding Night Lighting!!!!

(I do think the squarish form top above the circular tower is a bit disconcerting. It needs to be rethought.)

I think the problem with that rendering is that the background buildings appear closer than they would be, as if they deleted some space. May be why 4 TS is missing. The depth perception is slightly off.

we need to acknowledge it looks just like xing lin has been prepping us it would look like with his cool renders — that is, a lot nicer than we thought.

no big surprizes here — thats a good thing.

you know, as time goes on it actually becomes dare i say it more mundane.

its a normal hotel bldg with an observation tower spire.

so why not use the spire ride for a further amenity gimmick?

if anything the weird on it now via these official renders is the bizzare greenery.

This just … blows my mind.

Instant landmark. Haven’t had time to read about this of go through this thread much, but has this design been finalized? It’s not going to be dumbed down to something bland, boring and safe?

I previously worked in a field that caused me to get very familiar with New York City's zoning/setback/floorspace/etc rules and, having become very familiar with these rules, I wondered why no one abused the letter of the law to build very tall buildings with lots of empty space in them, thereby getting around the cost/inconvenience of buying extra air rights. My idea was always to build a very tall base with no or minimal floor space, but it's interesting that this project will use essentially the same idea, but halfway up the building.

There have been many such proposals, and no, it isn't that easy. The city has shot down tons of such proposals, and NIMBYs have changed the rules so you can't just evade the zoning by building a tower on a pole, essentially.

And most of the city has height limits, so you typically couldn't do it anyways.

No it doesn't

Yeah, the design is finalized. There may be small, imperceptible changes, but this is pretty much it. Times Square is leaning into its identity as the heart of tourism in the city. Everything fits. Just down the block there is a proposal for a Ceasars casino. A few blocks away the old Times tower is being turned into an interactive observation deck. There are other developments complete or nearing completion.

That’s great news. Almost every day during the summer I walk down from the Upper East Side to SoHo right through the heart of Manhattan, and say Hi to Empire State, Chrysler, Vanderbilt, Grand Central, Flatiron and a few others before saying Hi to Woolworth when I conclude while pointedly ignoring 1 World Trade. I can’t wait to say Hi to this beauty.

The goal is to include ideas from Las Vegas, Coney Island, and Dubai for Times Square.

Manhattan is always good for a walk. Every now and then I take a walk right up Broadway, all the way from Lower Manhattan through Midtown. You can see the different changes as it winds its way through the city. But you never feel as if you've left the heart of the city. It's why we call it "the City".

This tower will be very prominent from the west side due to its location, an instantly recognizable icon, focal point of many postcards and photographs, both of and from.

I like it! It looks like something out of a futuristic science fiction movie.

Yeah, we've all seen those movies, with the weird looking futuristic skylines. We think it will get there one day. But something like that doesn't happen overnight. It takes a building at a time. Still, there are some many traditional looking buildings going up that we're a long way from that.
