Police: Woman’s death a murder

The death of a woman attacked in the foyer of a Primrose Street apartment building in Dartmouth on Friday was ruled a homicide on Saturday.

"We’re interested in talking to anybody who can help us determine a motive," Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said after an autopsy confirmed the middle-aged woman was murdered.

Police were not revealing the victim’s identity or the cause of death, citing the need to contact the next of kin and protect the integrity of the investigation.

"The cause of death has been determined," Palmeter said. "We do not want to release details at this time."

Police confirmed the victim was a longtime resident of the Halifax-Dartmouth area and that she was found wounded in a common area of a building at 44 Primrose St. at about 8:21 p.m. Friday after police responded to a call. She was taken to hospital but died shortly after arriving there.

Some people living in the apartment complex and some neighbours said the victim lived in the building.

People in the neighbourhood said they heard that the woman was stabbed multiple times and that a knife was found inside the foyer of the apartment building where the attack occurred. Police would not talk about the retrieval of any weapon. The neighbourhood was unusually quiet for a bright sunny day. There were few children in the usual play areas near the apartment building, which appeared well maintained and surrounded by nicely manicured gardens.

"Everybody’s all gone hush, hush," said one passerby.

The man said he walks by the usually quiet four-level apartment building several times a day.

He said police sirens and flashing emergency lights were more common in the nearby Pinecrest Drive area.

"This is one of the better parts of the neighbourhood, but it is a violent part of the city," he said.

The man, who did not want his name published, indicated he lived just around the corner from the crime scene.

"There are a lot of prostitutes and a lot of people selling drugs around here at night," he said.

A woman who lives in an apartment building behind the murder scene said she heard nothing unusual before hearing police and ambulance sirens responding to the call.

Prior to police and emergency vehicles arriving at the scene, it had been a quiet and uneventful evening, said a young woman who lives in the building and knew the victim.

"I didn’t hear anything," she said before heading into the building with a friend and a small child.

Members of the Halifax Regional Police-RCMP major crime unit and a Halifax police forensic identification unit were at the murder scene throughout the day Saturday.

They appeared to be concentrating on the foyer area of the small apartment building where the victim was found.

Police urged anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 490-5016, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.

St. John's is still sitting at 0 for this year. I love living in a place where a homicide-free year is a possibility. With recent, and what seems like dramatic increases in crime/violent crime in the city though, those days may be over. The total for last year was 3, which is still pretty good for a region of just under 200,000 people.

No kidding, here in GP with 50,000 people we had 3 murders (that number would go way up if we counted the reserves in the area)

Correction, should have said 17.

Last night a 70yo man died after an altercation with two other men in Hochelaga which brings the total to 18. Up from 11 last year.

Up to 21 in Edmonton. For comparison, there were 27 homicides for the entirety of 2010.

^^^ 21? it's not even June yet! Is it a lot of gang activity because that seems awfully high not even being halfway through the year yet? The scary fact is that we are just getting into the silly season (summer) when the majority of these things happen.

No murders in a year and a half in Windsor is quite a feat, considering our size. It just proves that Windsor and Detroit are two totally different cities, when it comes to crime, even though the two cities are very interconnected in many ways.
What happens in Detroit does not flow over the border into Windsor-Essex!

Not sure it is mostly gangs...seems to me (anecdotally) there are a large number of domestic homicides, and a large number of 'buddies' getting drunk/high and knifing each other.

By DAN ARSENAULT Crime Reporter

Violent crime in the Halifax region has risen by seven per cent in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the previous year, according to statistics released Tuesday by Halifax Regional Police and the RCMP.

There have been more homicides, attempted homicides and assaults but fewer robberies.

The figures also show a 13 per cent drop in property-related crime.

Overall, there has been a five per cent drop in crime, according to the figures.

The total number of Criminal Code incidents from the first three months of 2011 is 5,935; there were 6,265 in 2010. The six homicides and 13 attempted homicides from the first three months of the year show increases from four and seven, respectively, in 2010.

Assaults increased from 691 to 758.

There have been 148 fewer break and enters in 2011 and 230 fewer thefts under $5,000.

Motor vehicle thefts jumped by 46 to 158 this year compared to 112 in 2010.

The economy is on a roll and their is a shit load of menial labour jobs available. This attracts all sorts of losers from reserves and elsewhere across the country and the those who prey on these uneducated people flush with cash follow.

meh. It's not like random people are being targeted, so what do we have to fear?

Fear itself.

An awful lot of stabbings, generally in the same area. Like most cities there are areas of clusters. But I agree with you these are mostly not random but dispute resolution.

Just to clarify, are the losers from the reserve the victims or the victimizer?
