[Halifax] Choice Hotels (15 Lakelands Blvd) | ? m | 16 fl | Completed

With the recent Canadiana restaurant closure looks like there is a hotel planned for the site at 15 Lakelands blvd. I couldn't find anything about it online but according to the advertisement board they have it looks like about 22 floors and is advertising a convention room, restaurant and entertainment hall.

I'm really unsure about the floor count of this one... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I really don't think that's any kind of rendering and is more logo-ish, stylized branding, whatever. I can't see any market for a hotel of that scale here, especially with another one coming on line @ Nova Center(someday!) and a few others in the works.

I find myself questioning why anybody would put a convention centre in Bayers Lake.

This will only be five floors and an addition to the existing. Mostly a new restaurant, convention room, etc

Five floors!?

They need a disclaimer... "Actual product may not be exactly as shown"

I was looking at the lot on maps today, 20 stories would be hard to do on this site, I don’t know where you’d park everyone.

I'm sure its just a decent-sized meeting/ballroom. Lots of sales meetings, strategy sessions, etc out there.

That makes perfect sense.

Was just a little thrown off by the illustration of a skyscraper-type building and a proclamation of "Convention Centre"... first thought was: Are they wanting to compete with the Nova Centre... from Bayers Lake???

I spotted an updated rendering on the hoarding today. I coudn't catch details, but it didn't appear to be a "clip art" tower rendering as the sign use to have. So far I haven't been able to find anything online.

Untitled by Hali87, on Flickr

There was more info around the site but it wasn't really practical to get photos. From what I remember the plan is for multiple restaurants including one on the top floor, as well as convention space with a capacity of ~600. It's described as a "boutique" hotel, I forget if the number of rooms was mentioned but it looks to be around 27 floors including the lobby etc.

Annnnd we can officially add "boutique" to the list of words that originally had meaning, and have now been watered down by real estate marketers to the point where they are completely meaningless. In what world is a 27-floor hotel "boutique"?

Metalsales said in a post above last year that it's only five floors. It seems strange that info is so sketchy on this one.

In what world is a tower at the edge of a business/industrial park, surrounded by big box stores, parking lots and roads, a boutique hotel?

The amount of people visiting for businesses and companies is insane and there is a huge market for that. The 4 or 5 hotels in Burnside are an example to that. Also if Bayers lake gets a lot more outlet shops there will be a lot more people wanting to stay in the area coming from places that are a days drive away.

It really all depends on the ambiance, amenities and services they offer. A hotel in a business park is usually pretty predictable in terms of what the guest expects. If you do something different then you would presumably qualify to use the term "boutique".
