Fantastic! I feel bad for NorQuest staff and students right now because they have offices and classes in weird little offices all over the place, and in not very nice buildings. They right now just use whatever space they can get.

Apparently Norquest College's expansion will be having a ground breaking May 20th. Another half city block of surface parking gone and a few more students downtown! Not to mention a new green space for downtown!

If there were a record for gobbling up surface parking lots short-term, Edmonton would be hounding it to death!

Student success/workforce demands at centre of NorQuest expansion

EDMONTON – NorQuest College officially began its downtown campus expansion today with the groundbreaking of the new Centre for Learning.

“This investment in NorQuest College is an investment in Alberta’s future,” said NorQuest College president and CEO Dr. Jodi L. Abbott. “Today’s groundbreaking continues the transformation of our college as we provide workforce relevant education for our students, and economic benefit for our community, and our province.”

When the Centre for Learning opens in 2017, more than 11,000 students will receive the workforce-relevant education needed to fill Alberta’s growing workforce demands.

“We’re building Alberta by investing in people and creating innovative learning spaces that enable Albertans to get the skills they need to succeed,” said Premier and Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education Dave Hancock. “NorQuest College is a leader in health care education and academic upgrading. The new Centre for Learning will enhance NorQuest’s ability to provide Albertans with in-demand skills while at the same time strengthening Campus Alberta.”

Along with Alberta Premier Hancock, members of the college’s board of governors, NorQuest students, and employees, elected officials from all levels of government, and the general public attended the groundbreaking.

The expansion will consolidate the college’s five Edmonton campuses into one downtown location and will complement the current main campus building, which will receive a retro-fit and be renamed the South Learning Centre. It will also complement The City of Edmonton’s Capital City Downtown Plan and augment the reputation of Edmonton’s downtown core.

When completed, the Centre for Learning will add to campus life and enhance the NorQuest Learning Experience, which defines the college’s commitment to the education of its students.

Are We There Yet? New Building Design Hits New Milestone

November 14, 2014
The design process for NorQuest College’s new Centre for Learning reached a new milestone this week. The design is now 70 per cent complete, up from 40 per cent in August. The process is on target for completion by the end of February 2015, at which point bidding on the project will begin.

The building design process is now nearing the finishing stage, explains project manager Steve Yacucha.

“The 70 per cent mark means that we’re well along in the process in terms of location of walls, doors, load-supporting beams, plumbing, power systems, HVAC et cetera,” says Yacucha. “The final stage will focus more on the finer details, like finishes and furnishings.”

Meanwhile, site preparation on the City of Edmonton laneway is coming to completion. As part of the process, EPCOR will be removing its underground duct bank from the laneway starting November 17. This process is expected to be complete by November 30.

Following completion of the laneway, construction will begin on a new loading dock. The loading dock will be complete in the spring of 2015 and will facilitate the delivery of materials for the Edmonton Downtown Campus.

The Centre for Learning is planned as a LEED Silver 22,500 m², four-story building facing Capital Boulevard, flanked by 103 Avenue and 107 Street. It will feature labs, a daycare, a new library, food services, an Aboriginal ceremonial room, and student activity space.
