Calgary - 11
Brampton - 13
Ottawa - 13
Vancouver - 14

Winnipeg has had a spate of murders the past week. I think they're at 17.

Gun violence is out of control in Toronto. This is straight up unacceptable.

Damn Toronto, looks like you are picking up the slack from Edmonton and a couple other places this year. How does Toronto stack up against American cities right now?

It’s still low compared to most American cities but it does have a higher per capita homicide rate than NYC right now. Toronto is at 2.9/100,000 based off of 2,930,000 population. NYC has around 225 homicides right now making them at 2.6/100,000 based of of 8,620,000 population

Here's you outlet to do something about it!

Here's the government's public consultation questionnaire. Pretty obvious the direction their taking. Fill it out.

Other than knee-jerk reactions has anyone come out with a proper analysis of what is different this year in Toronto than past years which might be causing this surge?

I don't think so. I speculate it might be the mass killings (Danforth, Van Attack a couple others) along with possible surge in gang violence. Im not sure if that isnt a knee jerk reaction, but of course its simply my speculation.

I've not seen anything in relation to it, but these things usually reflect gang competition, no? Is it a coincidence that there were some major gang busts earlier this year that probably created power vacuums needing to be filled?

The main revenue source of those gangs is going to be put into the hands of the state and private sector investors in 5 days.

I don't know if they do this in Toronto (I assume so), but here in Thunder Bay, those gangs have been approaching poor people, and making offers to them that they'll fix their homes and buy them things they need (food, appliances, vehicles) on the condition that they give free room and board to those gang members, who are shuttled in and out of the city on a fairly regular basis. In one situation about a month ago, it was discovered that they had done this in a social housing townhouse complex and made corridors in the attic and basements that linked multiple units together. It was the scene of a standoff in September that lasted about a day. The dependency that they create with the legal tenants of those units gives them a strong incentive to not talk to police, so their presence is allowed to grow significantly before it is detected. They're literally behaving like a parasite or a cancer.

This is new to Canada, but it's similar to how insurgencies in the Middle East and Africa have been conducted for decades. Hamas in Palestine is known to us as a terrorist organization; to the Palestinians, it's the people who give them food, shelter, and jobs. That's the relationship a lot of people have to these gangs, and that's part of what makes them so difficult to control.

The mobility aspect—shifting people around a lot—is a tactic that's more familiar, gangs have done that for a while. But the literal parasitizing of innocent people's homes is new, and we don't seem to have a strong strategy to deal with it. Ironically, however, the townhouse complexes they're colonizing used to have actual police detachments in them. (One unit in the complex would operate as a neighbourhood police station). In Thunder Bay, there is a strong desire to see those come back.

Not a homicide (officially), but might as well be. A sad story, nonetheless:

I am unsure how a grown man can assault a 3 month old child but I do know that if convicted of this, I hope he gets gang banged and dummied every day he spends in the bin.
What a piece of shit!

88 for the city now. 1 more homicide and Toronto ties the record that was set in 1991 with 89. Other years where Toronto had At least 80 homicides were 2005 and 2007 with 80 and 86

I could tell you exactly what/who the problem is with, but then I'd probably get suspended from the forum by people who prefer to stick their heads in the sand and dream about rainbows and fluffy unicorns.

Toronto's high number this year is in large part because of the van incident in north York - the number is higher than average with that removed, but not as crazy high.
