Above the pedestal, construction will proceed in a conventional manner, Mr. Ross said, with a concrete core rising first and the steel exoskeleton following. The tower will have 67 occupied floors. The principal tenant will be the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Rather than hide the unusual support system, Brookfield will highlight it with a cladding of travertine quarried about 15 miles east of Siena, Italy. Because the overhang eliminates the need for structural columns around the lobby, the exterior glass curtain wall will be almost diaphanous.

“The idea is that you’re not reading the glass, you’re reading the core,” said Christian Heimple, the vice president for construction at Brookfield. It promises to be a sight that will continue to astonish.

Sucks this will kinda be blocked from the Hudson. The view from Downtown looking north should be nice though.

^^Do you guys see the reflection of the 2-flat with a large cornice in the lobby in that first rendering? Is that what's across the street? How cool would it be if this was actually "lobby-art", as an ode to what was once on the site. Juxtaposed on the lobby walls of what will be one of the most contemporary buildings in the US.. what an elegant entrance that would be.

Ode to what once was???

Not lobby art...That's the 9th avenue side of The Farley Post Office... it's still there and being converted into the new Farley/Penn Station!

^ And there will be two of them!

A little more on that rink...

The NHL will occupy five floors at the 67-story One Manhattan West tower and plans to install a hockey rink in its space, although Brookfield reps said that was not set in stone. Brookfield will need to acquire permits from the Parks and Recreation Department for the rink, according to NHL Group Vice President of Communications Frank Brown, who said the NHL could use it for various events.

“I’m sure there would be public skating and activities for which the rink would be used, but any time we would want to orchestrate an event there would be synergy with having on-ice opportunities,” Brown said.

The league will also lease 15,000 square feet of retail space at Manhattan West’s 200,000-square-foot retail center for an NHL Store where fans can grab merchandise from all of the league’s teams. Afterwards they can head a few blocks for a pint at The Flying Puck at the corner of Seventh Ave. and W. 30th St., a Rangers bar frequented by fans of many teams.

The NHL moves from its headquarters at 1185 Sixth Ave. (at W. 47th St.), which was roughly 27,000 square feet smaller. Its not the first company to pack up and head to the West Side from Midtown — just over a third of all the office space in terms of square-footage at the neighboring Hudson Yards development will be leased by companies previously located in Midtown East, according to the New York Post.

Definitely one of the coolest -- if not the coolest -- building rising in the emerging Hudson Yards area.

Is there any reason (besides aesthetic purposes) that this tower rests on a podium? I can't imagine that it's easier to build a sound structure without columns resting at it's four corners.

It sits atop a huge active railyard. It needs a podium.

Correct.

Quote:
With a volume of 1.2 million cubic feet, this structure alone would be more than enough of a building in most parts of New York City. But on the Far West Side of Manhattan, which is being redeveloped at a gargantuan scale, it is merely a pedestal for a skyscraper that will eventually soar 995 feet.

The $1 billion skyscraper, called 1 Manhattan West, will not simply sit on this pedestal. It will balance on it.

The pedestal extends 42 feet beyond the building’s core to the north and south. The south overhang will suspend the tower over three parallel Long Island Rail Road tracks. The north overhang will act as a counterbalance.

.....the rail yard has been covered with a deck made of precast, hollow concrete segments that will form a public plaza when the project opens in 2019.

The deck could not possibly hold the weight of giant office towers. Instead, 1 Manhattan West will rise straight out of the bedrock cliff on the north side of the rail yard. It will overhang the deck and some of the tracks below.

What makes the overhang possible are 75-foot-long diagonal braces, called kickers, that transfer the weight of the tower and pedestal into the building core.
