great addition wrabbit!
...that might be one of the most underrated buildings in the world. the pod style structural elements are ingenious. this is one of those buildings that is hard to image from simply looking at pictures... maybe this'll help for perspective:

and where are all my detractors??? i'm lonely without your ideas of why modernism is so awful. i even posted ALSOP, and still no one came to crash the party... you guys complete me!!!

perhaps the title of the thread should be changed to: EVIDENCE WHY ARCHAIC FORMS OF ARCHITECTURE ARE USELESS IN MODERN SOCIETY AND DO NOTHING MORE THAN HOLD BACK THE PROGRESSION OF ARCHITECTURE INTO THE FUTURE; EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT ARCHITECTURE THAT REJECTS ANTIQUATED FORM AND PRACTICE.

Will Alsop is architectural masturbation.

Happy?

Might as well put this post here, as well:

Milwaukee County War Memorial, Eero Saarinen.

I can't detract on the Bordeaux Law Courts Building. That thing is awesome. Good use of wood on the pods. I didn't know you could do that with wood. Atomic Glee, could you call this use of wood 'cold'?

I like the Alsop building in an intellectual way, but not in an aesthetic way. It reveals the 'curtain wall' for what it is a 'curtain' with no real structural reason for being than keeping the wind and rain out. As for the colors, I can't give it more than 5 months before folks want to paint the darn thing.

COLOR is the most transient of all design / art elements. Color dates clothes, buildings, carpet, lamps... etc faster than anything. Anyone own an avocado green refrigerator???

Claus and Kaas Building: While it's proportioned well and well made, it reminds me of the concrete bunkers built in the early 80's that were once referred to as office buildings.

Channel Four Offices: Dang, I thought someone did a snazzy paint job on the Lloyds of London Building.

I'm so very, very, very tempted to post pictures of Biltmore House (1895), and some of the art deco buildings around here, because for their time they were extremely progressive. Biltmore was, in fact, the most technologically advanced structure on earth when it was built.

However... it's richly ornamented and is recognizable as a house, which means that you and your ilk, Adrian, would like to see it burnt to the ground, I imagine.

Cold might not be the right word. Thing's got terrible street interaction, though. Certainly not my cup of tea.

I would be hard pressed to call pretty much any of the examples you post "progress" - more "regression" than anything. My personal taste is beside the point, though - I continue to find it fascinating, this totalitarianist/fascistic attitude hardcore modernists have towards anything they consider unworthy.

Woah, I never realized that this was a Saarinen! I always liked it, but long ago gave up trying to defend it to my friends who think it is butt-ugly, especially compared to the Calatrava wing...

Ando is sick, sick, sick.

CGII, that memorial is pretty sick too. Gotta love that visually impossible cantilever. Are there any pics of the interior?

Maybe I've just had too many bad brutalist concrete college buildings forced on me, but I can't think of anything more depressing than a bare concrete wall. This shot in particular just makes me want to cry. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/135/3...943785f7_o.jpg

I used to have the same opinion on Brutalism but several examples and designers, with Ando being at the forefront, allowed me to admit that Brutalism can be done right.
