Anyone at the UMC brackenridge redevelopment talk tonight? I saw on the news, the max height of the buildings will be 135 feet? Say what?? Prime real estate next to 35 can only be 135 feet??

That area isn't in a CVC, is it?

According to this, it's not in a CVC. It's where #2 is.

A master plan for the redevelopment calls for about 3.7 million square feet of new construction space with the potential for buildings between 35 and 40 stories tall. Central Health will lease the Brackenridge campus to a developer but will keep ownership of the property.

Thursday’s event will include presentations and opportunities for attendees to offer comments.

In particular, Central Health officials plan to discuss a possible land-use overlay for the campus, a decision on which is pending before the city of Austin Planning Commission, according to a Central Health news release.

Maybe that's all it's zone for currently, but they will try to get a variance. I'm sure somebody else will know for sure.

Plans for the center include a façade renovation of the former Target space for future tenants and the construction of two new pad sites fronting I-35.

Brackenridge Site

901 East 6th looks to be getting underway. The grid in east Austin is arguably the best in Austin outside of downtown. Skyscrapers have pushed past every original Austin boundary except for the east (west of Shoal Creek, north of MLK [UNO] and south of the river). As a planning commissioner said last week, it's inevitable that they will go east as well as there is nothing sustainable about protecting million dollar single family homes from development.

Good. Grow East. That would be awesome for Austin. I'd love to see East Austin full of skyscrapers one day. It would be funny to see gentrifiers complain about being gentrified out of "their" neighborhoods.

I don't have a paid subscription, but according to the new owner's website, it is a Floor & Decor store.

Hasn't that (sort of) started to happen with the new NIMBY's and One Two East? haha

It'd also be good for regional commuter patterns, as 183 becomes a more viable pathway into the core.

Texas grocery magnate gives $100M to create education training academy in Austin

Quote:
By Will Anderson
Jan. 17th. 2017

Charles Butt, CEO of Texas' HEB Grocery Co., is making a $100 million investment in the future of Texas education.

His donation will help create The Holdsworth Center in Austin as a training academy for public school administrators, to support current principals and superintendents as well as groom the next generation of education leaders. The money will come from his personal fortune, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The goal of the nonprofit school will be to improve public education across Texas, according to a Tuesday announcement.

Absolutely. I see the South 183 project as one of the biggest changes to the city of Austin this decade. It's essentially activating the eastern half of the central core. We're going to see (more) tendrils of development east on MLK. 51st is rapidly developing between Manor and 183. AISD is selling a 12 acre plot on 51st.

Also, maybe this is old news, but there is explosive low-medium growth off 51st (2-3 story townhome/condos).

The Lofts @ St. Stephens
http://www.theloftsatststephens.com/...your-home.html

The Grove (not @ Shoal Creek)
http://brohnhomes.com/communities/the-grove

Also, the entire NE corner of 51st @ Springdale has recently been cleared. Hopefully adding some variety to the mix.

Would be great if the area was being developed with a nice street grid. Instead we're getting pockets of development with zero interconnectivity.

I don't mind all the ~400 footers that have gone up. Increased density is the goal, but buildings like in the link below are what I'd hope Austin could produce more of. Imagine if The Fairmont's windows had the kind of tilt that 350 Mission St does. Would make a worlds difference!

Rando pics from a rainy day. District 9 will have a new Council Member two years from now. As Austin's most walkable neighborhood doubles as our cultural heart, our hub of business and Gov't and is also home most of America's fondest Austin memories--I sure hope it's someone amazing who wants to see us remain the best downtown in the south and will work with all of their colleagues to keep it that way.
