The tower will cost about $60 million dollar and be about 274k square feet.

Buffalo's Outer Harbour Getting A Makeover

Buffalo Common Council just approved a mandated coastal review application by a 6-3 vote for a tower complex called Queen City Landing, endorsing the construction of the 23-storey apartment tower on the site of the soon-to-be-demolished six-storey Freezer Queen cold-storage building. Some of the elements considered in the Common Council meeting included storm water runoff, migratory bird patterns, environmental impact, and the preservation of the historic storage building. Many council members thought the tower would be a daring addition to the harbour, while others, such as David. A. Rivera, thought the building belonged downtown instead.

yeah, basically this. Is there anything worthwhile nearby easily reached on foot?

Though I post MUCH more on the other forum because of activity, I can tell you that preparations are underway for this. A couple days ago I saw some excavation on site just to the north. Perhaps it was utility work.

Asbestos work is underway. This should conclude in September I think and then demolition will be in the fall.

Buffalo board approves Queen City Landing's shift away from Lake Erie

The chance to add waterfront access via a wider pedestrian walkway, one with decorative landscaping, is the outcome in developer Gerry Buchheit gaining approval to shift the 23-story Queen City Landing project back 25 feet from Lake Erie’s edge.

The request was unanimously approved by Buffalo Planning Board members after a brief, 15-minute discussion. The board spent more than 90 minutes reviewing the request during a Dec. 19 public hearing.

“Anything that pushes the project back from the water, for me, makes it more acceptable,” said Cynthia Schwartz, board vice chairman.

Not only will Queen City Landing be 56 feet back from Lake Erie’s edge — up from 27 feet original proposed, the building will be 19 feet shorter.

As for his Queen City Landing project, Gerry Buchheit isn’t looking back. But he's not looking forward, either.

Last March just as the pandemic hit, Buchheit pulled the plug on his $180 million, residential project set for 20 acres overlooking Lake Erie on Fuhrmann Boulevard.

Covid didn’t kill the project, but the final blow was the lack of a tax deferment package after Queen City Landing had prevailed in a municipal review process that lasted for nearly two years with multiple design revisions. Three lawsuits were all won by Buchheit, who estimated he spent more than $11 million total on Queen City Landing.

Bummer, I guess, but this always seemed like a rather odd and isolated location for a residential tower anyway.

Maybe if it was part of a master plan to transform that whole former industrial area into a more residential/mixed-use thing it could work, but as designed, it just looked really lonely and out of place relative to the rest of the city.




That said, it would be kinda cool if buffalo one day develops an area of its lakefront for residential highrises a la Milwaukee's East Side or Cleveland's Lakewood suburb.

For all off their 10,000 miles of shoreline, the great lakes don't really have much of that sort of thing outside of Chicago, Toronto, Milwaukee, and Cleveland.
