They have been out here the past few days. Also, in the alley there are markings on the ground with chalk. It has somethign to do with construction, but not sure what it means.

Yes, it's very exciting to see HVZ finally begin! Below are a couple more pics I just snapped.

This was probably already posted in one of the many Austin threads. But here's a street level rendering from the architect's website:

Super good news. This will anchor Rainey St. to the rest of downtown in a way that the condos alone could not really do. It almost guarantees that other development closer to Cesar Chavez will take place sooner rather than later.

Does anyone know if they have submitted permit for crane?

The permit doesn't show up on the city's building permit website when searching for permits for the Van Zandt.

Crane permits seem to be the best indicator as to whether or not construction is imminent. The longest period of time I have noticed between the issuance of a crane permit and construction start has been 7 months (which was Seaholm.)

The renderings suggest at least some underground parking, so maybe there is a bit (or a lot) of excavation to be done before needing a crane. I am being unusually optimistic about this one. I don't think the site clearing is just a PR stunt, but it has been done before on other projects. They did announce funding and a lender. That usually means good things.

There are three levels of underground parking, so there is no need for a crane right away.

Wow - that's great! (Although I still wish they could have stuck with the original Hotel/Condo design.) I was just wondering about this project today, so thanks for the update.

Those folks with the gigantic north facing balconies at The Shore are gonna lose their views. I guess they knew that going in because there has been no public fuss about it in the press.

Not too much to look at to the north is there? I'd bet most of the time on those is spent staring west. Maybe there's a good view of ACC activity I'm not considering.

Although now they are going to gain views into hotel rooms of guests that forget to close their blinds.

I haven't seen that one. I only counted 15 floors in that one. I'm assuming that first floor is the double level lobby, unless there's 2nd floor within that space.

Yeah, I think the lobby must be 2 stories. If that's true, does it mean it's technically only 15 floors?

To me, the part of the building above the parking levels looks like a modern-day version of the Brown Building at 8th & Colorado.
