Here is a place we haven't seen on Nla...which is a bit surprising since there were, at least, three locations.

old file / ebay

p.s. There are only three [nla] posts at include the word temptation. (and none of them are about this place)

For those interested in the subsequent life of Miss Florence Foy: She married Remington Olmsted, and subsequently lived the quiet hospitality/guesting life of a social figure.

At length:

And finally:

And here is her home at 627 W. California in Pasadena:

October 28, 1928, is when Fox Studios opened for the first time. According to this article in The Hollywood Reporter, in 1929 the L.A. City Council voted to extend W. Olympic (previously called 10th Street) which effectively split the studio lot in half.

By 1935 it looked like this: (Which brings up the question, if the street at the bottom is Pico Blvd. and at the top is Santa Monica Blvd., where's Olympic?)

Also: In the aerial below, what is that circular shaped building in the upper righthand corner? I'm assuming that's the triangle area where Wilshire Blvd. meets Santa Monica Blvd., where the Beverly Hilton is currently located. What was there before that?

As for Century City:

Why Century City Ranks as One of the Worst Real Estate Deals in Hollywood History
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/fe...s-worst-635438

And, not really noir, but some excitement last week:
https://variety.com/2019/biz/news/ce...un-1203164631/

The Westfield Century City mall near Beverly Hills was evacuated Friday afternoon after reports of a man with a gun. Videos posted to social media showed people running away from the mall exits, or locked inside stores. Police asked people at the mall to remain calm and shelter in place as officers continue to clear the scene. The LAPD later said they were investigating a suspicious package. On Friday night, the LAPD released a photo and details of the suspect, writing that he is to be considered “armed and dangerous.”

Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum happened to be at the mall, before a scheduled appearance that night on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, and tweeted that he was in a “secure location.”

From the drawings of the locations on the matchbooks, I don't believe any of those buildings are still there.

They should've used Oscar Wilde's famous quote as an advertising slogan.

"I can resist anything...except temptation."

Where's Olympic?

That would have been a perfect slogan Martin. (I'm curious. Did Oscar Wilde ever visit Los Angeles?)

As for you other question-

I believe this illus. [from the Hollywood Reporter] answers your question about the 'missing' Olympic.

To see the key to the numbers go here [direct link coming].

update:

I couldn't locate the link again.
so here's the key. It's rather derivative. (I think that's the right word)

Oscar Wilde did get to California on a tour--he made it to San Francisco--but I'm pretty sure the he never made it to LA, least not in the flesh. However...the Oscar Wilde Collection at the Clark Library is the largest in the world.

Check out the property on which the library stands here

We had a brief discussion about the 20th Century-Fox studio lot being bisected back in 2014, prompted by the picture below. More posts can be found starting about halfway down page #1092.

How did I miss this tunnel?

.

re: The secret 'tryst' tunnel that runs beneath Marmont Lane from the old 'Players Club' [1940 to 1953] to the Chateau Marmont.

GSV

How is it possible that I've never heard of this tunnel before? .......(my faulty memory?)

In 2012(?), Harry Morton dug out the entrance to the Players’ legendary tryst tunnel — which connected to the adjacent Chateau Marmont
and has long since been sealed by the city — as well as a revolving circular band stage buried beneath the dance floor."
.........hollywoodreporter

sidenote:......Hmmm......I always thought Earl Carroll's had the only revolving stage.
___

I realize that we have seen this photograph numerous times on Nla
...but it shows the close proximity of the Chateau Marmont (tall building, far right) to the Players Club.

Player's Club was originally a residence. DATE OF PHOTO: 1946

lapl

"A tunnel, recently uncovered, that led from the Players through the hill under Marmont Lane into the bowels of the Chateau Marmont Hotel next door.
The manager confirmed that the tunnel did indeed exist but said it was all boarded up. And this leaves us with a mystery: Who built the tunnel?
Was it Preston Sturges, or some earlier or later owner?
And, just as intriguingly — why was it built?"

Read the rest of the article by JON PONDER at playground-to-the-stars (includes a photograph of, our very own, Martin Turnbill.

It's the Chinese United Methodist Church at 825 N. Hill Street.

Thanks Valentino! ........ but does it ring any bells?

The following two images are interesting as well.

UMC digital archives

I, especially, like the image of the tall trees at the [Japanese] Gardena Strawberry ranch. (eucalyptus, I think)

I wonder why the Chinese Sunday school class is posed in front of a commercial building? (field trip? or is this where they met for Sunday school?)

I wish dates were included with the photographs.

If this church does any bell-ringing, the chances are good that it is electronically produced.

I was being silly, Valentino.

"Does it ring any bells?"

ring a bell
"To seem familiar, remind one of something, or stimulate an incomplete or indistinct memory."

it seemed humorous [to me] since we were talking about a church. ha ha

That's the way I understood it, but my reply was far less humorous.

I can see Methodist on the sign above the woman on the far left, so as for the date, how about 1915? That year there was
a Chinese M. E. Mission at 522-1/2 N. Los Angeles Street, which puts the Sunday School class in front of the Lugo House!
This looks like the same spot c. 1905, the last year the Pekin Curio Store was in the city directory at 520-522 N. Los Angeles:

CHS-5168 at USCDL

P. S.: Thanks, odinthor, for the additional information about Florence Foy.

You da' Man Flyingwedge!

I completely overlooked the Methodist sign. [in the Sunday school photograph]

detail

So I take it, this is the same building (?)

I am finding the Japanese / Chinese photographs at the UMC Digital Archives

-->HERE<-- are all the results when I used "los Angeles" as the search word.

The Los Angeles photographs are often mixed in with other, more distant, locations. If any of you fine noirishers would like to go through the, rather long list, please feel free. It's fun!

and extremely interesting.

Spaulding Tate

Curbed La has a article on 10500 Cielo Drive, and in the comment section someone mentions how they could never live in a house where a murder took place. That got me to thinking about the house i grew up in, 1442 S. Spaulding Ave.

My dad (or my grandmother) bought the house in 1976, and it was a shell. Everything was gutted inside, no rooms or a foundation, just the street level floor with a huge blood stain. The story i was told, the previous owner was shot in the front door which would be to the left of the window on the right (*). The neighbor to the right of the picture informed my parents and myself when i got older, that her brand new 1972 cadillac had to get repainted after the blood splatter got on her hood.

Can any of you help with finding any information on this "murder" , he or she may of just been shot. The house is long gone, but it would be cool to know the facts.

Mrs. Lewis's driveway where her caddy was parked, looking towards my house

*From the time my dad bought the house till about 2001, we didn't have a front door. The previous owner tried to cover up any memory to the murder, so they lifted the house (hence no foundation), covered up the door, and called it a day. Dad thought it was cool to enter through the back, so our back door was our front door. We had a door bell on the fence and it was always easy to find us.

Front/back entrance.

I hope this question isn't impertinent, but if you were Chinese, would you write "group of Chinese children" or "Chinese church" on your photographs? Or did archivists write those notes?

E_R, your note of "Does this church ring any bells?" amused me, especially because a couple days ago I watched "Bells are Ringing."

I found this nice 1929 aerial shot of downtown. Anyone have any info on those gigantic tank looking things next to the river? Damn things are bigger than city hall. Must have been quite a sight at ground level. btw there are some great old LA photos on this flickr page.
